Type 1 How long have I had Diabetes

Hi, I have recently been diagnosed with diabetes. At first it was believed I had type 2, but after my second set of blood tests showed I have type 1. I am having a few issues at work, as they are currently deciding if I am still able to do my full duties. I currently work at a train station. What I want to do is prove is that I am more than capable to do my job with only a few changes to my work. To help me do this I need to find out how long I have been working with diabetes before I was diagnosed. I feel that this would help me show that if I had no incidents before being diagnosed, then with the knowledge and medication I should be able to manage fine at work. So I'm after information about a test that could help indicate how long I have had Diabetes before being diagnosed.

Hope you can help

hI,

Have you had any of the diabetes symptoms leading up to your diagnosis and if so, how long for? (tiredness, fatigue, blurred vision, excessive thirst, constant urination, generally unwell).
What were your blood glucose levels when diagnosed?
Have you previously had any blood tests that were normal, or with results that weren't given to you?

The hassle and ignorance of diabetes.
I think your first port of call should be the Diabetes UK Careline - they should be able to point you in the right direction concerning the law: http://www.diabetes.org.uk/How_we_help/Talk-to-someone/Careline/

The other one will be your local CAB (Citizens Advice Bureau) who will certainly be able to help, as should your union (if you belong to one)... type 1 diabetes is officially classed as a disability and comes under the protection of the Equality Act 2010. Your employer needs to get you properly assessed and make appropriate adjustments to your work. There's still a massive amount of ignorance about diabetes, so stand firm - and get a diabetes specialist on your side (e,g, your diabetes consultant).

I have suffered from a lot of the symptoms for some time, especially the tiredness , but put that down to starting work at half four and not getting to bed until about eleven at night. As for the thirst and urinating that only kicked in about 5 months ago. My levels were on average around the 16 mark but between 9 and 25. Since dramatically changing diet, being on meteoric and recently starting on insulin they have dropped. To between 7 - 14 on average, but I still get the odd reading in the late teens.
