How long have you been prediabetic?

I thought that an HBa1c of 51 was in fact diabetic ! unless they have moved the goal posts again!

51 is considered a diabetic test results (I think the cut off is 48mmol/mol or above is diabetic, according to current uk diagnostic standards), but the closer to normal blood glucose levels, the better because it reduces our chance of diabetic complications.

So most of us are trying to keep our BG levels as low as possible, and preferably below diabetic levels.

I was wondering how long prediabetics can stave off the big D. Would like to hear some success stories and also tips and tricks to help the rest of us. I'm a strong believer in Lchf dieting although I'm not very low carb and I don't count them as such, I just cut out bread, pasta, flour, potatoes, rice, sugar. Sometimes get plagued with anxiety so if anyone is the same, would appreciate any advice! Many thanks

Cutting the carbs may make a huge difference My HbA1c was 67 when diagnosed T2 not even Pre diabetic in February. I starved my self for a month, went low carb for 3 months.
4 months after diagnosis HbA1c was 38.
There are others here who have had greater improvements.

I've had pre-D levels for at least the past 4 yrs, but inspite of low-carbing have only managed a small reduction in a1c, but at least now it is just below pre-D levels. However, I think that there may be something else going on with me, as I can tolerate glucose but not carbs ! ! ! 75g of glucose will take me to just 6.3mmol/l maximum, with no reactive hypo either, but even 23g or carbs (in food) can easily take me from anywhere between 9 and 13 mmol/l. Don't know if anyone else has experienced this? But the plain fact is, if I keep on eating carbs as normal I will be in double figures at every meal and will easily produce an elevated a1c to diabetic levels. So, its LCHF for the foreseeable future, and anyway, its a very healthy way of eating too.

You raise a very interesting point.

Most of us who test our BG have noticed that we tolerate some foods better than others (for instance, 10 g of wheat bread carbs spike my BG far higher than 10g of potato carbs), and I had been shrugging and just accepting that 'all carbs are not created equal', and 'we are all unique'.

Then fairly recently I started to wonder if there might be a link between BG levels and food intolerances.

In the past I have had tests done and been told that I have very mild intolerances to most grains, but not to potatoes.

Have you ever been tested for food intolerances?

NB: food intolerances are very different, and much milder, than food allergies.

I am definitely intolerant to wheat, haven't eaten any grains now for quite some time. Its not just grain though, its carbs, right across the board, from fruit, beans, rice, bread - gluten free, sugar, buckwheat, corn, all the stuff that raises a diabetics BGs, except glucose ! !

Don't want to hi-jack a thread. I will post on a new thread to see if anyone else has any thoughts.

Thanks all, it's only that I was on a lot of meds and had a tonne of stress going on that my gp said that might have altered the true reading. Off meds now so am looking forward to the next test in August. Here's hoping! Finding low carbing great, but still finding exercise more difficult! Must get more motivation. Have lost 17 lbs though! Am chuffed with that.
