Hi All
I thought I would post this subject, I have had diabetes for nearly 50 years, it will be 50 years in March 2012.
It would be nice to hear from the long term and also the short term one,s who have diabetes
I got diabetes when I was 6 years old and it was a bit confusing to me in those days, but it has got a bit easier to live with. :)
No more weeing in a bottle and putting 10 drops of water and 5 drops of urine in a test tube, then putting a clinitest tablet in the test tube to see what colour it went.
No more glass syringes, boiling them in hot water after a few days of use.
If you go to www.palingswickhouse.co.uk you can see the diabetic hostel I lived in, please look for Kevin Baum.

gollymax -this and similar questions have been asked before, look here for example viewtopic.php?f=25&t=20152.

I think thats the reason for nobody answering your post this time. Please dont be upset by it, you are a most welcome member and enjoy having you on board.
As a long term diabetic you will have plenty of experience to share I am sure.

Re Palingwick House, many years ago when I was still a student I used to live in Shepherds Bush and often walked past there, but thats all I know about it.

Hi Gollymax
As we spoke on the phone recently I was diagnosed at the age of 6yrs old, and i am now 42yrs old.
I was placed in the home for diabetics, just like yourself, (Palingswick house in Hammersmith and Fulham council).
I have had some complications mainly with my sight, the left eye is my worst eye. I have Neuropathy in my feet, had trigger finger ops on both hands, Overactive thyroid which then went to underactive thyroid, then i got toxosis from the levels of levothyroxine being too high, lost roughly 3-4 stone.
Take care
Tracey

Hi Tracey, is trigger finger caused by diabetes? I have it in both hands but had no idea it might be diabetes related

Hi Grazer
Like you and Tracey, I have had trigger finger in both hands, I have had 3 operations on 3 fingers on the left hand and 3 operations on 3 fingers on the right hand. I have also had carpel tunnel syndrome on both hands, both hands had to be operated on. I dare say they operated on both hands at the same time :problem: when I was recovering in the ward after the operation both my hands were stapped up high, they told me I could go home tomorrow but were told I must keep both my hands up high for at least 3 days :?
I asked them how I was suposed to test my blood inject and eat, the nurses look some what confused.
Anyway I went home and sorted the problem out for injecting etc.
Trigger finger and carpel tunnel syndrome is common in diabetes.

I was Diagnosed on 17th March 1962 and remember the bad old days , well the diet we were put on is now considered criminal (Diabetic Doctors at Hammersmith hospital) . I`m alive and kicking so maybe starving me for 10yrs wasnt a bad thing and the 1 injection a day was better .

Hi murphman

I see you were diagnosed on 7th March 1962, The hostel I lived in was in Hammersmith W6, do you know PH?
I remember the days of being starved as well, being hospital and seeing the food given to other patients and I got none, do you remember the urine test 5 drops of urine + 10 drops of water then a clinitest tablet, to see what colour it would go Neg(blue) Trace(light green) 1+ (green) 2+(dark green) 3+(brown) 4+(orange) then 1 drop of urine on the acetest tablet, hoping it would stay white :D
Who was your doctor at Hamersmith hospital?
