hi everyone i have recently been in hospital with dka , my consultant wants me to go on the pump . i saw my dsn yesterday and she agrees it would be the best thing for me! my question is how long does it take from being referred to actually getting the pump?

I am not a pump user but have gone through the what ifs with my nurse. Basically it depends on your pct at the NHS level its a done on the size and how many ppl they have. It also a week long progress at my hospital with daily visits to take you through process but when I asked about it it can take a month or so to be seen. Hope this helps.

hello marie

I think that you might have to wait for around about 2 months but this does depend on whether your pump has to be ordered from a company and as such funding for it has to be sorted out before the purchase is made. On the other hand some people have been able to get an insulin pump earlier but that is usually because a hospital has been able to buy insulin pumps in bulk at a reduced price and the funding has already been sorted out for them to do so in advance.......

If you find yourself having to wait for funding to be approved, make sure that you know how to use insulin to carb ratios and correction factors as this will help you get through some of the hoops a bit quicker and will satisfy a dietician that you know about the DAFNE skills........
