There are various methods used by Type2's to control their blood sugars. Most know how many carbohydrates they are consuming in a day. It would be interesting to see how many calories as well and if there has been a reduction since diagnosis. A quick calculation of a typical meal before and after diagnosis is all that is needed.

Ive never counted calories Catherine either before or since diagnosis, all I can say is I would guestimate that I now eat about a third of the calories I used to.

One example I used to eat 3 or 4 chock bars a day and a similar amount of packets of crisps, I see from a crisp packet that they contain 134 Kcal per packet (Walkers Plain) and a Picnic bar contains 230Kcal per bar according to Cadbury's web site - couldnt be bothered to check other bars but I guess they are all similar - so theres a saving right there of around 1100 calories before I even look at actual meals

Two sandwiches a day then and one now, theres another 50% saving. plus the much smaller portions of everything I eat now. It must come to a pretty large reduction.

Scary is'nt it. I used to be the same, 4 or 5 bars of choc a day without a thought, and crisps, could easily eat a couple of packets in morning then afternoon again.

I used to think that the large packets of Pringles were individual packets, a bit like peanuts, once started I had to eat the lot regardless of packet size

I can conclude backwards from my weight loss what my calories have been.

To lose a pound a week, you need a 3500 kcal deficit. That makes 500 a day.

I am losing 3 lbs a week, that is 1500 kcals a day.

I am burning about 700 of those by exercise on average. That leaves 800 kcals to account for.

I currently eat about 1700 kcals.

So I must have eaten in the area of 2500 before, or maybe 2750 as I was putting on weight ever so slowly

I know

I now eat between 1000-1200 per day.

I was a snacker, bread being my downfall, could easily eat 6 rounds a day, plus crisps - plus my portions were huge and I would clean my plate regardless of being full.

using Mileana's way of working out I was probably was having 2500 ish per day

I don't think I am ever going to give up crisps, lol.

It's the one single thing that I know I shouldn't do which I will do anyway.

It's not much, maybe once or twice a week, a small bag of the things, but I really can't imagine not having them. I'm an absolute crisp addict. I'll have the extra carbohydrate portion when I can't put it off any longer.

Mileana,

1 packet of crisps a couple of times a week wont make that much difference.

I still have a pack a couple of times a week and include as a meal.

I do think that it depends on the individual. Like Sid I simply reduced portion sizes and stopped snacking. For some who eat very high calorific foods then it may help to look at lower calorie options. Some people get bogged down by numbers and it can feel demoralizing. Others are motivated by numbers and targets and therefore gain much better control of themselves and are very, very strict.

I say whatever works for you, but you have to find the way that suits your personality and lifestyle.

 yes, but as a treat to curb a crisp binge, it's not a bad alternative as won't spike and you don't have to have whole packet. :D

I use the Full Body Analysis Calculator here:

http://www.webcalcsolutions.com/Health- ... ?AcctNum=3

My example:

...
fbac.gif

This indicates a resting metabolism of 1715 calories and an actual metabolism of 2658 calories.

The gap is 943 calories.

I burn about 850 calories 5 days a week in swimming. But I am still slowly losing weight.

Bit difficult to work out but using stuff similar to Mileana.

I put on 3 stone over 10 years prior to diagnosis which works out at roughly one hundredth of a pound per day. My diet during that period was generally healthy. Using BMR to calculate how many calories a day I must have been eating then it comes out around 2400 a day over that 10 year period. For the first few months after diagnosis I calculated both grams of carbs a day and calories per day and tried to target around 1800 or a 500 calorie per day drop. As Mileana says this should equate to an average of a one pound drop per week but for the first 6 months I actually averaged 2. In the last couple of months my weight loss has slowed but is still dropping very slowly at a rate of about half a pound a week.

This is a very useful link. There's just one bit I don't understand - how does one measure one's elbow width please?

Elbow width (place mouse over the words on that site). It reads:

The width of your elbow. Hold your dominant arm straight out in front of you then bend your elbow 90 degrees, pointing your fingers straight up. Keep your fingers straight and hold your thumb towards you. From the under side of the bent arm, use calipers to measure the distance between the two prominent bones on either side the elbow. If you don't have calipers, use your opposite thumb and index finger to find the two prominent bones of your bent elbow. Measure the distance between the thumb and index finger by carefully maintaining the distance and holding them against a tape measure or ruler.
