I think it probably depends on where you started. I was diagnosed as T2 last year when I went for my free NHS health check. I was totally gobsmacked to find I was diabetic with a random glucose of 18.6mmol/L and an HbA1c of 10.4%. As I worked in labs I knew exactly what that meant! Not good news. The diabetic nurse couldn't believe that I had absolutely no symptoms and I had clearly been diabetic for quite a while.
I can eat virtually no carbs at all so no bread (I always ate seeded/granary anyway), pasta, potatoes, root vegetables, breakfast cereal (had bran flakes with chopped fruit every morning for the last 20 years), almost no fruit, the list goes on; very depressing.
I started at 8 stone 9lb and am 5' 3" so was about the correct weight for my height. I rapidly lost weight and now seem to have stabilised at 7 stone which is too thin for me. If you are newly diagnosed and your glucose and HbA1c aren't too raised you should be able to have some carbs and still keep your results in range; sadly I can't. I assume you have a glucose metre and test strips so that you can test after eating carbs; that is the only way to find out what your tolerance is; just hope it is better than mine! I test 1 hour after meals if I have any carbs as I can be quite high at 1 hour and not too bad at 2 hours, this tells me that I shouldn't have had the carbs. I had three Chocolates at Christmas and my glucose was very high at 1 hour but no worse than normal at 2 hours so no more chocolates for me. I had a very frugal Christmas!!!
