How many grams of carbs tolerated?

I am doing The Blood Sugar Diet and today is my first Fasting Day. I am allowed 800 calories for the day (I've had 300 already this morning for breakfast).

My question is that I have only had 11g of carbs and will of course have some more with my evening meal tonight but wondering how many grams of carbs I can have as I have a lot spare? thanks

Please may I share this - I feel quite elated! :-)

At lunchtime today, I went with a group of colleagues to a Leaving Do at our local Thai restaurant, I was a bit nervous on my food choices as I have been low carbing for only a few days now. I decided to have a mushroom hot and sour soup for my starter and for my main I chose a chicken curry but I asked for vegetables instead of the rice and they brought me a big plate of veg which consisted of beansprouts, broccoli and a few carrots. The vegetables would have been quite bland on their own but with the curry and it's sauce, it was absolutely delicious. I had a sparkling water to drink with ice and lemon and finished off with a coffee. I have just tested myself 2HPM and my BS reading is 7.7 - I'm over the moon with this and just proving to me that my careful food choices will lower my BS levels - Why oh Why did I not do this 7 years ago?? - my only regret!

Congratulations. I know exactly what it feels like when a good choice delivers good result...terrific:)

Personally I always go for as few as possible... feeling that fewer carbs are nearly always better than more. Also don't be tempted to "save" some for tomorrow. Sounds like you are doing really well keep up the great work.

Thanks, it's just that I remember reading somewhere that the RDA for carbs should be about 130g daily for brain health and function but that could be for non-diabetics, not diabetics, is that correct?

I have lived off less than 20 carbs a day for 25 years. I assure you my brain is fully intaked. It's when I eat carbs that I don't think straight, get blurry eyes, bloated stomach and not to mention stupid high bs. The brain prefers to be fueled by ketones and we don't make ketones when we eat that high of carbs

As far as I am aware your brain will function very well without carbs.. Ask @NoCrbs4Me who doesn't eat any at all.. I think that the 130g per day requirement has been refuted. Although I'm sure there will be people along any second to say I'm wrong on that one..You know how it goes..But @Kristin251 agrees too..

If we needed that many carbs why do people thrive on knt emitting fasting and eat no food at all. I have researched all the ways the body can compensate for fuel. Fat is my fuel and the body had no problem functioning without carbs. I do enjoy some above ground veggies but I don't NEED them. Fat and protein are essential to life , carbs at not. I'm not saying there is no nutritional value or not to eat any but 130 is not at all necessary. And how can they say some random number for everyone. I am 125 pounds and my husband is 225 so saying we require the same amount makes no sense. That theory has been well debunked. People like their carbs but they are not a REQUIREMENT for life

Thanks All its great to get concerns aired on here and all very useful and interesting information. I will take all the information on board and find what works for me. Will keep you posted on my journey :-)

You may need to watch that you're not going to go too low calories, carbs and fats all at the same time because we'll use (as @Kristin251 told you) ketones/fat for brain power in place of carbs when we eat too few of them - and fats are very calorific.

(who also has a fat burning brain - using carbs for brain fuel tuned me into abrain dead zombie for 5-6 years prior to diabetes diagnosis!)

I average 200 g per day and my BG is rarely over 8 after meals. Usully 6-7 . I take Nova Rapud according to each meal I'm about to eat. Some meals have 150+ g.

Thats great if you wish to take medication Tom but if you don't and treat via diet only then fewer carbs are far better IMHO.

I have no problem taking meds at 71 I've done very well on meds.
I just had a light lunch. 78 carbs and took 24 U Nova Rapid. BG 2hrs later 6.4.Alsoad diet coke which I always drink after meals .Usually caffeine free.
I prefer to enjoy myself.

I think the 130 grams of glucose per day for the brain to function is correct. However, if the glucose is not available then the body converts fat to ketones which the brain is perfectly happy to use for fuel.

Well, zero carbs works for me. I prefer that than to jab myself every time I wan to eat something. However, if your pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin, then you don't have much choice.
That's the case! My diabetes care team are totally happy with my results .
A subdermal injection is no big deal in order to save your organs.

My pancreas doesn't produce insulin so of course I inject. However I don't pump myself with insulin to eat carbs. I take 1/2 unit with meals as long as I keep carbs low. I don't think I could eat enough food in general to take 24 units. I eat great food and enjo my life. MY life is not all about food for enjoyment. I have a family, friends, career, sandals, handbags etc.

Tom, glad you're happy and enjoying your life, just not my style
If I had to go one way or the other I would do just what @NoCrbs4Me does or I would be brain dead along with @Robbity

Well... I'm 73 and eat a very low carb diet (and have done so for about two and a half years) and just take a lowish dose of metformin to help this out - I much prefer a decent diet to high levels of medication any day, and definitely enjoy both my life and my food. :D My whole day's carbohydrate consumption only includes about half of what just your lunch does, and with some small modifications I eat an excellent and more healthy diet now than for some years previously, and am much better both mentally and physically for doing so, and my glucose levels are in the close to normal diabetic levels. My average fasting and pre meal levels are in the low 6s and post meals, mid 6s. So not every diabetic wants to eat high levels of carbs, or needs to take high levels of medication to stay healthy and happy, whatever their age!
