I think the secret to weight loss on a walking programme is to restrict calories rather than think you can burn off the excess. Even at my old weight, a fair pace (5.8km/h) and a steep incline, I wasn't burning more than 1,000 calories a session, and with the appetite you can get from walking, it's all too easy to put that back on in a single meal.
