How Much Insulin?

Although everybody is different I was wondering how much those on insulin take to cover their food. Currently I take ~60 units/day to cover 150 gm CHO. When I was a youngster is was ~30 for 250 gm. Background insulin is another 40 units.

Hi,

I am only recently diagnosed (This January). I currently take 8 units of lantus in the evening and anywhere between 1 - 5 units of Novo Rapid per meal. This covers 150 - 200g carbs a day.

I take 3units levemir in the evening then 0.5 unit Novorapid per 10g carb. Intake per day varies, but it's generally about 120g so maybe 6 units per day. It's often less though as I exercise in the evenings so don't inject when I'm doing that

I inject 46 units of Lantus every evening, my usual first thing in the morning blood test is around 7.3. Nobody has ever suggested monitoring carbohydrates, I wouldnt even know how to begin doing that. My doctor is brilliant with everything except diabetes he seems to have a complete blind spot where it is concerned. In fact I only got put on insulin after I changed my doctor for a while, and the new surgery put me on it. Unfortunately the doctors there were just awful and so I changed back to my original doctor, ( at least he is good with everything else ) I last had a blood test about three months ago, which was the first for a year, I have no idea what the numbers were for the hba1c, he didnt tell me. I have asked several times to see a specialist but thedoctor always says that I dont need to see one and he refuses to refer me.

Yeah your right when you say we are all different Stephen.

My basal (lantus) dose taken once a day is 18 units early evening, my bolus doses vary depending on what I eat but I tend to stick to around 150-180g of carbs a day to which I inject 16-18 units of Novorapid.

Saturday gone wasn't a good day as I ate considerably more (250g of carbs) and injected a few more units of QA, blame the Mrs for making them bacon sarnies for lunch

I take 20 units of Lantus at night and between 8-12u of Humalog before each meal. I'm supposed to be starting carb counting next week! At the moment it's pretty much guesswork which reflects in my (rather high) blood sugars.
