I was 65 years old when diagnosed. It followed about 3 months of health problems involving unexplained weight loss, eyesight getting poorer, lack of energy & getting lost driving to the airport to pick up my daughter from London UK. In the previous few months I had seen my oncologist, gastroenterologist, dietitian, optician who referred me to a opthamologist and finally my GP who said I was not diabetic as she had recently had a blood glucose test. I was confused as I could not remember my GP having done a glucose test? A week later I was feeling worse and returned to my GP who confirmed the she had checked and had not tested my blood for glucose. A quick urine test confirmed the presence of glucose and at 21:30 that night she called me to say my blood glucose was 36.5 No wonder I was weak and confused. All my specialists were concerned about me having a recurrence of cancer (colon cancer in 2000 and pancreas cancer in 2002) .... some may have asked me if I was diabetic ... I obviously said "No, I was not diabetic" My pancreas had worked perfectly for some 7.5 year after having two thirds of it removed and then it obviously packed up without any significant symptoms (apart from the classic diabetes symptoms). I am very healthy now and on a basal bolus regime of 10 units Lantus in the mornings with 2 - 9 units of NovoRapid (daily total) with meals. My last few HbA1C test results have been between 6.1 and 6.3 I am following a LCHF diet and am not having any problems with it.
