Hi this probably sounds a silly but i have no idea about how to calculate my type 2 diet as i have'nt
got my appointment for my dietition. (diagnosed 3 week ago). Since then i have been eating muesli for breakfast or branflakes. Homemade soup or brown bread tuna sandwich or bacon toastie for lunch . Tea time home made beaf stew with potatoes or tuna pasta salad. The problem being for me is i have spent the last few years eating only one meal a day drinking loads of alcohol every night. I simply did'nt feel hungry. Now i am actually enjoying eating three meals a day and my weight is going down approx 2ib / wk. I have tried the calculators on here and i am lost i have fully embraced my diabetes (alcohol intake was 126 units per w/k now is 20/wk ) was smoking 30 / day ( now /10 ) My bloods are settling down from 39 to 9.9 and would like to keep it that way . For the first time in years i have an appitite so any advise would be great and thankyou for reading :D

HI THANKS .IS THERE ANY BOOK IN PARTICULAR YOU WOULD ADVISE :?:

Do you have eyesight problems ? The reason I ask is that posting in CAPITALS is considered to be shouting on the Internet and Forum's.

One that we (Sue and I) can recommend which has larger print and is easy to read is :

Calorie, Carb and Fat Bible 2011. This should be available from most high street bookstores or can be purchased online. It is updated each year and is considered to be very accurate.

There is a smaller Collins Gem series of books although if your eyesight is bad you will also need a magnifying glass to read it !!

Yes i do have eyesight problems i have never been in chat rooms or forums in my life . Thanks for your warm welcome folks.

Hi, there are two ways you can increase the print size on the Board.

At the top right hand side of the Board, just above where is says login / logout there is an 'A' with arrows. Clicking on this will increase or reduce the print size on the Board.

You can also use ' ctl' and the plus or minus sign on your numerical keypad on the computer to do the same thing. This increases your screen magnification. Hope this helps.

Buy a carbohydrate counter book, Amazon is good for them. The start cutting out asmany carbs as you can. You probably need to get down to 80 - 90 grams of carbs a day, but everyone is different, you might handle more or less.

Alcohol is bad, at least for me, I do enjoy a glass of something, but I find that I simply do not stop at one, so for me, it's no alcohol at all. Red wine can reduce your blood sugars and so can all alcohol, it keeps the liver so busy getting rid of the alcohol from your blood it has no time to pump glucose into your blood stream.

It will also push your blood pressure up and that can lead to other complications.

Buy a blood sugar test meter or ask your Doc. for one, and the test strips to go with it.

Test to find out what carbs you can manage and how much. Test in the morning before eating, maybe before and after lunch and before and after dinner. Keep a record of your readings and your food intake. You will soon see what you can and can't do.

Then when you know what you can handle you can ease right back on the testing, just test if trying new foods etc or if you are ill.

Smoking is not good for T2s, we already have an increased risk of heart trouble so anything that makes that risk even worse is a no no.

I know it's not easy stopping, but you have made a start and if I can do it so can you :-)

From your figures you are doing OK, you need to get them down as much as you can, and you will find some advice on here elsewhere.

When you see your diabetic nurse ask questions, and take a record of your BG readings and food eaten, times dates etc., it will impress them! It also shows you want to be pro-active in managing your T2, and have made a start at this. You need to be in charge of your day to day management, and keep an eye on your treatments and results. The Doc and Nurse will (or should) take overall charge of your T2. but don't take your eye of the ball.

Good Luck and keep us informed.
