Hello everyone, I am Jean aged 64 and have type 2 diabetes. I am overweight and wonder if anyone has used slimming clubs to help with weight loss. One club allows carbs in a big way and people not diabetic loose lbs, but would that work if "one" has diabetes type 2??? I was diagnosed in 1994 and am on Metformin and statins. Bye for now

An acquaintance of mine is a professional comedian and I once asked him how I could lose three stone of ugly fat and he told me to cut my head off. Boom boom.

I have lost 4st just by eating smaller portions, chip pan thrown out, biscuits out apart from sugar free ones used to walk but on bed rest now because of infection in toe. You have to be strict with yourself, eat fruit lnstead of sweet things also I found chewing on sugar free gum helped my brother in law and me instead of reaching for biscuits, sweets or crisp. Hope this helps you xx

Hi,

I am sure you must have got yourself sorted by now, this request was posted last month but I must have missed it.
I joined Weight Watchers just over 2 years ago when I weighed 17 1/2 stones. After losing 2 stones with them I felt that I could continue by myself. I have now lost over 5 stones by following the WW diet, which is really just a way of knowing exactly what you are eating and not overeating. I did't know when I joined WW that so many of the foods that are bad for diabetics, the starchy or high carb foods, are all ok on the WW diet. If I had cut down on those foods and low carbed it I would probably have lost more. I can reccomend the WW diet, just tell them you are diabetic and then check everything on this site to make sure!
I wouldn't say I am actually on a diet now, I just eat what I want when I want. BUT, staying somewhere near what my body needs to remain fairly fit and healthy.

Good luck,
Lee.

The only thing that works for me is low carb/ small portions and it's pretty slow. I eat one meal a day and a couple of snacks.
I also walk a lot. I tried Weight Watchers and the only pounds I lost were from my purse.
Hana
PS I have lost over 3 stones in a couple of years, not spectacular, but in the right direction.

Hello Jean. I am a T1 diabetic and joined slimming world last year and managed to lose 1.5 stone! I would recommend it! The plan they use is called "extra easy" and there is so much choice of foods and it worked for me! Good luck! :-)

I'm at slimming world, lost stone & half, LOVE the plan coz its not a 'diet', more a healthy eating way of life, whilst keeping a watch on treats etc. I tried and tried on my own, but do find the 'club' environment to be massively supportive & great for new ideas every week. Got another stone & half to go, it may take a while, but I'm in it for the long haul! Tried ww and think its great for short term or a specific goal but SW is far more achievable/compatible with 'real' life in my opinion.

Hi
I joined weight watchers and lost 2 stone it was great as long as you stick to it the weight will fall off, plus you don't need to feel hungry cos fruit and veg have 0 pro-points so you can snack on them between meals. I brought marks and spencers count on us meals as they show the amount of pr-points in each of there meals.

good luck

I've started using My Fitness Pal as I don't really have the time to join a weight loss club. I've found that it has made me much more aware of what I am eating and it's also made me think about my portion sizes. It's working for me!

Well Jean, it seems that the best and cheapest diet is just to eat properly! I do tend to calculate what I am eating by using the Weight Watchers 'points' rating for each food item, but I check what the carb values are too. It just so happens that I haven't found a yoghurt lower in carbs than the WW yoghurts. Most seem to have 10g and up per pot. The WW yogs are barely 6g. I joined WW by downloading a voucher to join for free. After that it was about £5 or £6 per week, if I went. Then main reason I left, apart from not needing them anymore, was that the weigh in was around 6pm, I couldn't wait till after 6 to get fed! I was a working man back then and I needed my grub. Being diabetic meant that I needed food a lot earlier than 6, and if I ate before 6 and then went to WW the food inside me would be weighed as well.

I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that 19st is my ideal weight because no matter what I do I can't shift any sodding weight!!!

I have cut out a lot if carbs. Hardly ever have potatoes or rice or pasta. Never gave any sugar obviously. I have increased my exercise dramatically (from nothing to up to an hour a day over the last 3 week's) and nothing!!

I used to go to slimming world/WW etc but would jump around the same 5lb so gave up every time. It's really starting to hack me off now as I see all these people say how much weight they lose going in low carb and exercise!!!

Hi eveshamgal,

I wonder what you eat and in what amounts? Most diets work by eating just enough foods to keep you fit and healthy, but I don't have to tell you that. The WW diet is the only one I've tried except many years ago I tried a diet milkshake. Most diets will work, the only diet that I think any of us should follow is the one I mentioned in an earlier post. To eat the right thing at the right time of day in the right amount. Or as someone who lost 17st said, 'eat less, move more'. Do you keep a record of everything you eat? I do, on the computer. I might lie to it but it don't lie to me! The record I keep has the details of the main foods I eat. Calories, protein, carbs and sugar, fat etc, and WW points. It tells me what my totals are as I enter them. I still find the points system to be a handy way of keeping check, but the carbs are now more important, closely followed by protein and calories. I don't mind going over points if it is to keep my protein intake at a good level. No matter what I do though I can't get my calories anwhere near the 2500 I am supposed to eat each day. It could be because I am a vegitarian and I don't eat eggs or any fish etc. I am not a great follower of hard exercise either. I would rather go for a 1 mile gentle walk than have a burn out on an exercise machine. As a builder I could never lose weight no matter how hard I worked. But as soon as I tried doing any form of exercising that used different muscles the weight would start to shift. This general plan of WW and gentle exercise has helped me shift over 5 stones and my friend Lorna who joined WW at the same time to lose at least 3 stones. Lorna will be 83 this year! She attends a gentle exercise class for the elderly (don't tell her I called her that!) and we take walks together. She will also help me with her garden which is quite large. Now the good weather is just about here we will be working on the garden and taking walks nearly every day. I am not trying to turn this into some kind of on-line diary, just letting you know that if you put your mind to it and stick to a diet plan it will work. I have to admit though, having someone to share meals and walks with has kept me on track. It is so much easier when you have a friend with the same goals as you, and I only joined WW with Lorna because she didn't want to go by herself! I planned to leave after a week or so, which means, I wouldn't have lost the weight or my diabetes. A cold sobering thought.

Please keep in touch, Lee.
