I am Type 2diabetic and HBA1C is 7 and cholestrol came out to be 5.4 in my diabetes check up appointment .the nurse told me that I should take statins which the doctor might prescribe in another appointment ,My doctor hasnt come back to me yet .the internet shows a mixture of responses on 5.4 number .can anyone please advise .I am also overweight with 29 BMI .thanks

Hi Gauri, I think it depends on the ratio between HDL and LDL. Also, triglycerides level. If you let people on this forum know those results they will be able to advise you.

My last two cholesterol totals have been 5.9 but the HDL (good cholesterol) has gone up and my LDL (bad cholesterol) and triglycerides have gone down. I’m not keen to take Statins and my GP has agreed that as my numbers are improving to stay off them. You need to read up about cholesterol and Statins and make your own decision, don’t be pressurised into taking them without being informed. I also agree with @NoCrbs4Me, your HbA1c is more of a worry.

Your HbA1c assuming it's 7% (53 mmol/mol) is pretty good. As far as your cholesterol goes you need to know the ratios as @mazza 2 had said.
