Hi, totally random question. I have 2 male neutered cats, however recently I have noticed around my front door a horrible smell that I can only guess is where a cat has sprayed. I don't believe its my 2 as its never anywhere further into the house. I do only have a basic cat flap as my door is metal I can't have a magnetic one and the others are so expensive.

Anyway my question is, is there anything I can spray that will deter cats from spraying but not stop mine from coming in?

Or should I get the credit card out and buy a microchip catflap at around £100?

I read a tip to stop cats jumping onto work surfaces in the kitchen that said to wipe Tabasco/Chilli sauce over the work tops and then clean them, the residue that is left is easily detected by a cats keen sense of smell. This tip worked for me. It may work in your case too probably worth a bottle of Tabasco, just soak a cloth and wipe around the areas where it is spraying, it will avoid the area like the plaque but may just move on to another area. Un neutered male cats will mark there territory especially where there are other cats living.

If you can catch the culprit at it then spraying with water from a squeezy bottle will often deter cats, but it would need to be done every time it sprays to reinforce the message so probably not possible.

I have also read that leaving lions poo around your gardens perimeter will deter cats but Im not sure how much London Zoo charge for lions poo or where else you could get it from

Thats exhausted my knowledge of cat wrangling :D

Billiant Sid!! lion poo...classic

i can top this, one of my four cats has taken a liking to pooing on the downstairs toilet floor, no idea why so im waiting to catch her with my size 11`s at the ready, my wife was doing her business yesterday when the cat walked in and proceeded to join in the fun right there in front of her, was very funny...

i know you can buy stuff from the pet shop called "keep off" because i bought some or my neighbour for his garden after repeated threats to shoot my cats with hes airgun next time he sees one doing there business in hes garden, if it worked or not i dont know but he hasnt complained since, i doubt your cats would dislike it enough to not come home they has a great insentive... there dinner.

Good Luck

You can buy citronella rods that you stick in the ground which repel them.
Non invasive and chemical free.
Ebay does them cheap.

Thanks for the replys guys, I probably should have made it clearer. The spraying is going on inside my front door, I have one of those flats where my front door is at the bottom of the stairs (and this is where it stinks!) and everything else is upstairs. Ive had a good look but cant see any signs of spraying but what a smell, thats the only thing I can think it is. I have checked my shoes as my shoe rack is down there, but they dont smell and nothing dead in any of them!

There's a spray product called "Urine Off" If you clean the smelly area with it, it might make your house less interesting. Whilst tyou have a cat smell there, others will come.
Otherwise get an intact tom, who will beat up the miscreants. Unfortunately he may start to spray himself. Cats are notoriously difficult to train. Try one of the cat care wwebsites they migh have something that works.

Yes I have seen that Urine off on my online searches today. Ive decided to give it a try, its rather expensive but cheaper than a new cat flap!!

Good idea  lenny .
Let us know if its successful with the results you want .

It's much safer than going to a zoo, into the lion enclosure with a bucket and spade too :)

Sid you're a case...
