I have worked in my current job in an office for over 6 years. Everyone knows I am diabetic and no one has any issue... Or so I thought!
We were moving to a new larger office and I requested that I get a more private desk so that I could continue to do my insulin injections (in my stomach) without offending everyone. Well I opened a can of worms as some of my colleagues thought I was using it as an excuse to hide and "surf the net" instead of working. So now I am sitting out in the open and feel very exposed and have now taken to going to the loo or waiting till people nearby have gone for lunch before injecting. Anyway I have brought up the disability discrimination rules with our HSE and she not happy with situation.
I went back to work today after the festive break and now one person makes flippant (?) comments about me not wanting to eat the constant stream of cream cakes and chocolates that get brought in but I just shrug it off, but today was different there was malice in the comments... And I feel that she is taking the mickey!
She announced "oh i MUST have chocolate" and started taking chocolates from a box that was near her, then minutes later she loudly said "oh I must have more chocolate" she ate some more then again "oh I MUST Have chocolate" Then she said " oh my blood sugars must be low ha ha ha" and her buddy next to her started giggling... I just ignored her comment and thought god how ignorant and stupid you are! Then later our overall boss came over and started eating the chocolates and turned to me and said "oh YOU won't be joining us in these then?" To which the gaggle all started giggling!!
Now call me over sensitive but why after over 5 years is me being diabetic and preferring not to stuff myself with chocolate and make myself feel ill is this now a team sport and entertainment?? I feel different and don't wish to be treated so!
Coincidentally this is after when I arrived today she said "ooh you look like you have lost weight" (she was very overweight and now is almost stick insect)
How would you deal with these petty, ignorant people? I mean I even take in chocolate when I come back from holidays for them, I just don't eat it!!
