Newly diagnosed 1 year old. We are using Humulin N with the Humapen Luxury as the 0.5 increments are crucial.
We feel the pen is a little loose and not as good quality as the novapen echo that we use for his nova rapid.
Is there a pen that will accept the Humulin N cartridges that has 0.5 increments? Or does Humulin cartridges only fit Humapen etc?
I'm pretty certain the Novopen only accepts Novo insulin. I've used the Humapen before and I know what you mean about it feeling 'loose'. I changed to it from another pen and it felt strange to,start with. However, I've never had any problems with it and I did get used to it over a few weeks.
In general, the insulin pens are purposely manufactured so they can only accept 'their own brand' of insulin.
I read about Autopen Classic from Owen Mumford. Says it fits Humalog cartridges. Then there is the savvio from Eli Lilly, apparently the luxura has been discontinued??

The standard Luxura has been discontinued (replaced by the Savvio), however the Luxura HD is still available for those that need the option of half-unit doses.
As azure says, the pens tend to be manufactured by the pharma companies to fit only their own Insulin vials. This is irritating for the consumer, but fits the objective of the companies to make it harder for people to move to a different Insulin. On the plus side, this means that the companies are only too happy to provide extra pens for anybody who asks. So all you have to do is send an e-mail to Lilly and they will immediately send you another Luxura HD for free - this will allow you to judge if the design of the pen itself is not up to your requirements, or if it is just your particular current pen that has a problem. (I use the Luxura HD and am happy with it).
I have the relevant Lilly e-mail address if this is useful for you - just send me a PM (private message) and I can reply with this address.
I don't have an Autopen Classic myself so cannot verify this, but the Owen Mumford website does indeed state that their Autopen is compatible with Lilly Insulin cartridges. If correct then it should accept Humalog and Humulin S and Humulin N cartridges. But the Autopen does not do half-units.
