Hunger and Diabetes

My wife has had diabetes for heading on 15 years that we know of, however, just lately she seems to be more hungry than ever. A nurse came today and said that this was normal but am not sure myself.
Surely she should not be getting up through the night and wanting to eat almost every hour of the day. Not easy for us at times.
Just to give you some help she takes Byetta 10 in the morning and teatime, Insulin 10 units morning and 8 units teatime, Metformin Slow Release 2mg Morning and Gliclazide 80 Mg taken in morning and evening.
It is really since after Christmas that this has been a problem and has coincided with her blood sugars shooting up above 10 in the morning and in the evening when checking her blood sugars.
Since she has been on the Slow Release Metformin has had 1 reading at 3.3 but ther remainder far too high in the morning.
Before Christmas they were generally between 5 & 7 in the morning and below 10 at teatime. Her diet has not really changed since before Christmas so why they are up this high I have no idea.
Its only over the last couple of weeks that she has been on the Gliclazide and Metformin Slow Release. Prior to this she was on 500mg tablets 1 x 3 times daily.
At times she says that she feels sick at times as well and has been taking the Byetta for over a year now, think that started in about November 2008, somewhere round there.

Thanks for any help and advice.

Hi Hal
What is your wife eating? the problem is that food with carbs ( i.e pasta, bread, potatoes) in, it fill you up, but if you eat to much for the amount of insulin you are taking it will raise your sugar levels, i am on four injections a day and i must admit that sometimes i do have days where i feel hungry more than usual but i have never been that bad, maybe she should she her diabetes nurse.

I literally am in denial as regards my diet. It is like i am rebelling and pretending i do not have diabetes and eating as before i had diabetes. I cannot stop, trying to stay on the straight and narrow. I am really despairing.

I know full well the implications if i persist on my destructive course of behaviour. Does anyone else feel this way.

I was managing it so well initially losing two stone in weight and maintaining near normal blood sugars. Ashamed to admit did not test for six weeks.

HELP

Hi hal

My guess would be by what you say, is that the hunger your wife is feeling, is related to her high BG's, when the BG is high the body can't use the glucose probably for energy, so signals for food to create energy, bit of a visious circle at times, eat the food BG increases, and the hunger increases etc

I'm assuming by your wife list of medication that she's a T2 diabetic, byetta and insulin aren't generally prescribed together, and she is on one hell of a congotion indeed..

Does your wife actually carb count, as this would be probably a good idea if she doesn't.. As one way of helping to control the levels is knowing the amount of carbs per meal/snack you are eating, also what types as different types will asorb at different rates, carbs such as found in pasta can take quite a while to asorb and impact on the blood glucose..

I would suggest that you note down of all the foods she eats, types and amounts so that you can hopefully find out the foods or amounts which are causing the problems and high readings, and take regualr BG readings, fasting, before and after meals (and snacks if necessary) and at bed time, so that you can compare foods/amounts/types to how her blood glucose has reacted..

I don't think getting up in the night to eat is normal.
I personally am rarely hungry. I'm fairly strict on low carb and my portions are small. The only times I get hungry are like this weekend when we attended a family party buffet and I ate more than normal. I was somewhat hungry this morning. Still I had a salad for lunch and have been fine ever since.
