hi, i have recently started to get my diabetes undercontroll, lowering my sugars and keeping them in check. but i have noticed that i have become increasingly hungry. at first it was a warning i was going to or already was in hypo but know im hunrgy almost all the time, but of course i cant just eat to get rid of it as that will raise my sugars. im type 1 for those that dont know. can anyone help me?:(

insulin depends on what i had for main meals, breakfast is usually around 6 to 12, lunch is 10 to 18 and main meal is anywhere around 20 to 30. main meals are usually some form of chicken or other meat with random side bits. for snacks its usually sandwhiches and the occasional bag of crisps. i eat alot of fruit. not big on sweets though i love harribos.

If you have been running on high sugars, it takes a while for your body to get used to Normal levels. That could cause your hunger.
In addition, if you are reducing your carbs, you may need to increase your fats( butter, cheese, cream)
I am never hungry unless I haven't eaten at all for ages. I do eat lots of fat and my last cholesterols were LDL1.7; HDL 1.9; triglycerides 0.9. So fat isn't causing high cholesterol.

You can't argue with those numbers, hanadr! Good work!

You can if you are a dietician, obviously. The pattern is not uncommon with carb restriction, and not only for diabetics.

I just wish the scales would move down again. I lost well 2 years ago and now it's stopped. Still our sports centre hasbuilt a new Gym and the trainer who does my Aqua exercise class is going to start a circuits group for us after Aqua on Mondays. So I shall try that.

Not an insulin user, but I used to find the hungers were driven by a rapid drop in BG and probably the ensuing drop in (self-produced) insulin, not uncommon in Type 2 as the insulin levels we need to produce to overcome insulin resistance are that much higher. This is how eating carbs produces carb cravings.

Hi Trink
I'm not using insulin either
I think my diet does most of my control, with a minor comtribution fom 2 X 500 Metformin per day.

should i point out i only weight 9stone. im 17 almost 18 6ft 1, so rediculusly under weight. the rapid drop in sugar levels seems like it is probably the cause. i have spoken to my nurse and he agrees with me on the drop idea.

i have started eating 5 meals aday. good or bad?

Chips - how did you get your time an hour later than mine? (Or am i psychic?)(No - the time I see on the message is an hour later than 'now for me as well).

What did you weigh before the onset of diabetes?

Weight is often an issue in late teens/early twenties - my son is 6ft 3 and struggles to put on weight. He is putting it on now (mid twenties) by exercise and hearty eating. :-) I am putting weight on using the eating bit without the exercise :-(

Eating extra meals doesn't sound a bad idea as long as they are balanced - I would assume they should be heavy on the protein and fats and not too heavy on the carbs and sugars. I noted from earlier you are eating a lot of fruit - healthy but some fruits have a lot of sugar. I fell into this trap at first - I thought loads of fruit and fruit juice was a healthy diet until I realised just how much extra sugar I was getting.

Exercise also helps build muscle, which puts the weight on in the right place.

Good luck!

i weigh 10 stone before, lost 2 stone in a month and found out i had diabetes. i dont drink fruit juice for that reason as well. i noticed alot of things have loads of sugar, so sad:(.

water doesnt really fill me up but you maybe different i couldnt tell you on that one. also the time is prob different because of where you live. or my laptop is wrong lol

My main problem is the munchies when I'm online, I always make sure I have macanuts or cheestrings to hand, if i'm especially hungry i'll have a bowl of chargrilled chicken salad with balsamic vinegar drizzled over it yummm!

yep, Madadamia Nuts for the win. Is it that you are hungry, or just missing being able to eat what and when you want? Just a thought.

a few of my friends joke about that alot :) asking if i can have some of theirs lol
