I really hate nights like this :( for the last 5 hours i've been hypo, 1lt lucozade, my last 3 dextrogel, 1lt milk and chocolate... we are officially have nothing left with sugar :( im just hoping that i dont drop again as im on my own with my almost 4 week old angel and my 2 yr old monkey and i have absolutely nothing to bring me round... lets just say im a little worried (more like petrified as I have no idea what to do if i do drop) :(
on the plus side, my hubby has set off early to take daughter to school to get me some more stuff from the shop

Hi i'm not a great one for advice on hypos, so hope your feeling alot better today, can you call your DSN to get some advice ? also see if you can get Glucogel on prescription, I get mine this way and it's a quick way of getting it in your system, chocolate can slow sugar absorption, so normally I would take one Glucogel and a packet of crisps/1 x biscuit or a slice of toast and that works for me. Also I woke at 3.30am having a nightmare that I was having a hypo !!! Got a bit panicky so checked BS and was at 4.9..phew. Good luck :)

Hi Dragonflye

Not sure what is going on for you with all the hypos you are having... but as you are using a pump... how about turning it off for an hour so that the surplus basal already circulating gets used up... Sugar in some tea or coffee is good and eating a pkt of crisps, biscuit a bit of chocolate etc will mop up the basal..... Just keep testing bg levels and play by ear... You can always give yourself a correction if yr bg starts going too upwards. Just stay safe :)

Hi.

With all that quick acting your blood sugar levels should have returned to normal so it does sound like you may have too much insulin in your system. I have no experience of using a pump so cannot comment but with having a newborn and a 2 year old you must be pretty busy and it will prob take some adjusting to get insulin right after pregnancy but it does sound like you need much less insulin overnight. I know after both my pregnancies i dropped down from the massive pregnancy doses to pre pregnancy insulin doses but still had to drop it further, and i know after my second pregnancy (i had 2 year old twins and a newborn) i would regularly go hypo in the night. If you are breastfeeding this will use more energy, and even getting up regualary during the night to feed and care for baby you will be using more energy. Speak to your team about reducing your insulin. And as hypo treament goes I have just done DAFNE and the recommended treatment is
if your meal is within next hour- 1.5-2 CP (15-20 g) quick acting carb - ie sugary drink, glucose tabs, sweets.
If your meal is 1-2 hrs - 1.5-2 CP quick acting carb and additional 1CP (10g ) slower acting carb.
If you meal is over 2 hours 1.5-2 CP quick acting carbs plus 2CP (20g) slower acting carb.
Take care and i hope you get it sorted,
Helen x

ooops im getting panicy easy at the mo

Chocolate is normally a last resort for me :) i normally get glucogel on prescription however my gp practice has changed the way the do repeat prescriptions now, I used to be able to phone, now i cant, i need to order through the chemist with the slip bit you get on other side of prescription, however since i no longer have that the only way I can get a prescription at the mo is to have an appointment and with midwife visits still for my daughter (and other visits from other "official" groups) its almost impossible to get an appointment :( so until next monday its shop bought remedies :)

I hate suspending my pump but had it suspended for 4 hours this morning :) was a bad night lol as we had little in, shopping today :? really HATE shopping LOL but at least we will have stuff in and this month we have increased our budget for "hypo" stuff :)

I've always had "dodgy" night time hypos but on the plus side now with the CGM it wakes me up before I start twitching so I'm aware of the whole thing :)

Hi Dragonflye,
Hope today is a better day for you, Know how scary it is having hypo's when on your own with little one :( I stopped taking any insulin recently because of this fear and now am getting back on track on a new insulin, determined to take control again.
Your body is still healing from delivery, at my 6 weeks post GTT my results was 10.2, only just diabetic and was told it was type 2, 2 weeks later i was getting readings in the 20's fasting. It may take time but you will stabilize again
Good Luck
Jess
p.s Hows the weight going with Amelia?

When you pregnant your bodies immune system lowers, otherwise it would see the baby being carried as a 'foreign body that needs rejecting... Sometimes this actually allows the pancreas to recover a bit, which can reduce insulin needs after birth, and don't forget you've likely reduced insulin residence as well by weight loss...

It does seem that you are using too much basal insulin... It may be that you have to reduce your whole day, and perhaps up your insulin/Carb ratio..

If you making adjustments to your setting of you basal overnight, you need to start adjusting 2-4 hours before you want the change to take effect..
