Hello

My Partner is Type 1 Diabetic and has been for many years.
A few times now I have woken to find him sweating and making a real 'growling' sound. It does frighten me. Each time he has been unconscious and I have called 999. When they come they give an injection which brings him round. My big, big worry is what if I am not there? Will he die? I am frighting to go and visit my family and stay at theirs because I know all I would do is worry about him........Steve

He needs to make sure that his background insulin is at the right level (too much and he will go low overnight) and also make sure he has not had any quick acting insulin in the 4-5 hours before bed.

Firstly you could be trained to give him that injection, secondly has he discussed it with his team?

Unfortunately, nightime hypos do happen so if they do, start testing bg b4 bed and eat some carb if the bg is under 8mmol especially if the hypo happens around the 2-3am time period. If the hypo happens much later, then look at the timing of the basal and alter the time its injected to see if that helps.

Although expensive, cgm would give you and yr OH the peace of mind that you need but testing bg levels during the night and taking action b4 they go too low is easy enough to do

As the other guys have said he needs to adjust his background insulin so that he doesn't hypo during the night, if he's in doubt how to go about this then he needs to speak with his diabetes team asap.

Totally agree with whats been said, he needs to alter his basal,
you can get the injection on scrypt too so you can give it rather than calling an ambulance

Hi Steve:

Diabetes can be very frightening. They have a kit at the drug store you can get to help with his low blood sugars. It's specially for that.
Does he keep some kind of candy on hand at all times? What does he eat before he goes to bed. He must be
sure to eat enough carbohydrates or fruit to help keep his blood sugar stable.

I hope this information helps.

Thanks,

Shelly

P.S. Reducing the insulin he takes before going to bed will help a great deal as a matter of face it should be the first thing he does to
help with the low blood sugars. The insulin has been known to drop blood sugar especially when taking too much.
