Hypo feeling

I do not have diabetes
I've been monitoring my bloods for the last three weeks and they have been consistently high (15-18) I started on 1x 500mg Metformin last Monday and it has stopped my sugars spiking after food.
However, yesterday in the heat I started feeling woozy and not really with it. I had been drinking a ton of water, checked my sugars and they were the lowest they had ever been 5.7 which is obvious what I'm aiming for but I felt so sick I ended up eating an ice-cream and a handful of crisps to help perk me up.
I've stayed inside all day today and now feel sick, headache and woozy again and my bloods are 5.1.
My question is, is it normal to feel like this when my sugars are normal levels after being so high for so long?

Hi,

It has been observed by others that they get false low hypoglycaemia in normal range after prolonged high BG.
To draw an analogy. It’s a little like an alcoholic or drug addict going “cold turkey?”
As a T1. Personally if I give a correction dose to bring myself down from the levels you had been. Sometimes, I can feel the same as an early hypo onset. Then the feeling fades out.

Yes it's normal, and until your body realises that the lower figures are where it should be. They will continue to happen. Unfortunately the quickest way to get through it, is the cold turkey approach, uncomfortable but necessary. The only other approach, is to lower your levels a lot slower, but even then they can still occur, but not as frequently.
If you have to eat something, have as little as is needed for some improvement.

Thank you for the info, it's good to know that it's my body's normal reaction.
If I go cold turkey am I just going to get the feeling rough parts of Hypo or am I likely to lose consciousness? I only ask as I am often alone with my three kids under 5 and don't want to put them in danger.

What you are experiencing is normal - it is the reaction to lowering your glucose levels and many people experience it.
I had exactly the same, but in mid winter, so not so severe, as I think that dehydration can play a part in making the symptoms more severe.
I found that eating just three grapes with a drink sorted me out - but you might need some salt or other electrolytes in these temperatures. I have to remember to put salt on my meals - I forgot at dinner last night after a busy day outside and had cramps in the early morning as a result.

As long as you are only on Metformin a hypo shouldn’t be on the cards. That is people on drugs that drastically lower levels and insulin users.
What you have described is a perfectly normal reaction to lowering high levels when you have not had them for a while. Please do not indulge in high sugar level foods as it will defeat what you are aiming for. Snack amounts that will just enable you to function with 3 under 5s and give them 15 minutes to work.

I had been drinking a ton of water
Make sure you increase your salt in take. There was probably quite a lot in your previous diet and now you are washing out even more, yet our bodies need it. Just add a little to your food.
Some people like to add it to drinks as "electrolytes " but I prefer a more natural approach.
