Hypo one hour after a meal, follow-up snack or not?

Hi,

My daughter just had a hypo of 2.5. Second hypo today in fact. This one was an hour after dinner, think it's a combination of perhaps her NovoRapid kicking in before her meal? Not helped by the fact that she'd just been running around playing (sofa) football with her brother and sister in the living room. It was only 10 minutes, but exercise can make her go quite low.
I treated with Lucozade, 15 minutes later it had gone up to 5.6mmol/l.
My question is...do I follow up with a 15g carb follow-up snack as per usual or not? I am reluctant to do this as I think she might go sky high once her dinner carbs kick in? So I am planning to test her in half an hour to see if her BG is going up or down. Obviously if it hasn't risen at all during that time, or even going down, then I would give her a snack. That should be fine shouldn't it? Or should every hypo be treated with a follow-up, even in this case? What would you guys do?

I would be happy enough with it sitting at 5.6.

But keep an eye on her and test again in 30mins.

I know everyone is different but for me when I'm low, taking a good couple of mouthfuls of lucozade sorts me right out! Not needing anything else to eat.

Thanks, that's what I thought. She seems fine again, I will check her in a little bit to see what her blood sugar is doing.
I just felt it was not a great idea to feed her more carbs just after dinner, but as the DSN has told me off before for 'experimenting' with a hypo treatment (only giving half of the recommended fast acting as she was 4.5, but shaky) I feel I need to follow the 15-15-15 rule by the book! But it seems common sense to not do this on this occasion.

*Update* - she is now 9.6, so I am glad I didn't give her that follow-up snack.

Hi CCM

As a general rule I think for most people...... Lucozade, sugar, glucose tabs, jelly babies will only lift bg levels usually for no more than 1hr and then the effect wears off so if hypo 1hr after eating food with a bolus, use lucozade etc but also follow up with some sort of carb snack otherwise if you dont, I have a feeling that your daughter might go low again as the insulin's action will still be active... Trial and error though is key to everything. Try waiting and see if the low feeling returns, then you'll know that you should have followed with a 10g cho carb biscuit or such.....
