Good evening,

My son, who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes late last year, has been experiencing severe hypo symptoms (cold sweat, shaking, speaking difficulties) on and off over the last few days without actually having a hypo. What could this be?

He normally maintains excellent blood sugar control (between 4 and 6 mmol) but has been feeling under the weather due to a viral infection, with raised glucose levels (between 6 and 12 mmol, no ketones). Could the infection be the cause? And is there anything he can do to reduce the symptoms?

Thanks,

Carolin

Hi @Carolin

Yes infection can be the cause, what were his bg levels like when he felt like this ? Are you following sick day rules for his illness ? Apart from taking taking medicine such as calpol and keeping a close eye on him, there isn't much else you can do, really just weather the storm, but if he gets worse then get into your GP to see if there's anything else they can offer.

Hi Juicyj,

thanks for your quick response. The levels tend to be between 4.8 and 5.8 when this occurs, without significant drops or rises before or after. I think we are following sick day rules - he is testing more frequently than normal and is correcting levels as advised by his smart meter. Is there anything else he should be doing?

Thanks!

Hi @Carolin it sounds like you’re doing everything right, sick day rules really only apply if he is running bg levels in excess of 13 mmol/l, just keep him hydrated, keep the on testing every 2-4 hours and hopefully this will pass soon, best wishes.
