Hypo violence

Hi everyone,
I have been type one diabetic for over 40 years. I was recently diagnosed with depression and given antidepressants which I believe have made me unaware of the hypo symptoms. I am now finding that I am having severe hypos which I have no memory of in which I become extremely violent towards my partner. Does anyone else experience this or has anyone had this experience themselves? I am understandably very worried about this. I seem to be able to hurt my partner with no memory at all. I can't imagine how hard that is for them. Am I alone? Is violence common in hypos?

Sorry to read about your circumstances.

I honestly think you need to mention this to your gp, perhaps a change in medication might restore your hypo awareness symptoms and prevent the severe hypo's, understandably your worried as anyone would be but don't let this continue any longer, do make that appointment to see your gp or consultant as soon as you can.

Sorry that must be awful.

As noted your best bet is hypo avoidance. The basis of the violence is fairly common in severe hypos. You are basically in the state of a cornered animal. Actual violence is less common. Advise your partner not to physically touch you or crowd you in this state. He is probably desperately trying to assist you, and you lash out in fear, which is very sad. You probably do not recognise him at all when you are in this state.

I'm generally very moody with a hypo and today I threw a bottle of lucazade at my boyf - it's like I can't physically control what I'm doing but I'm so lucky my family is understanding! I hate diabetes I'd give ANYTHING for a day off :(

Hi Evaladive, just thinking outside the box on this...?

Prior to starting the antidepressants have you ever had any issues with like this during a hypo in your diabetes 40 year history..?

Do you take your antidepressants "on the button" or are you forgetting the dose from time to time..?

I was involved with someone once (a non diabetic.) who was more prone to serious violence while going through "withdrawal"... Due to running out of prescription..
These withdrawal symptoms physically in some ways (pale complexion, manic facial expression, & profuse sweating. Even an adverse "food denial" ) not unlike a diabetic hypo....

Ironically, I'm a passive hypoglycaemic...
