A little history to my introduction to being a type 2 diabetic four years ago in South Africa. After 3 weeks of waiting for my blood results and then phoning my Doctor, was told, "you have diabetes, type 2, collect a script from reception and don't take any sugar !!!!!!!!!!!! at the age of 61. I then wrote an article describing my patient Doctor experience and the empathy and lack of knowledge on this, now i know, important and serious disease. The article was published in :Diabetic Lifestyle" magazine in South Africa. Four years down the road my knowledge, treatment, experiments, research, medication has all been gained from little help from Doctors, Diabetic Councillors and Diabetes South Africa.
Everybody has a different story. I was initially prescribed a load of tablets, changed my Doctor and then put on to long acting Lantus, still with loads of tablets. Due to my experiments and reduction of all the tablets, now on 1X 500mg glucophage XR in the morning and 1 x 500mg at night and 30 units Lantus in the morning, have reduced my HBa1C from 13.6 (4 yrs ago ) to 6.5, 2 months ago. I have a had 3 hypos in the four years, the last one on Wednesday at 5.300pm. Managed it well, better than the first one, but i have a question: Do i still take my normal evening medication after the event?? I was not too sure what to do and don't see any advise on this via the internet, AND DON'T ASK ME TO CONSULT MY DOCTOR. I am also taking medication for, high blood pressure, High Cholesterol, all under control and heart medication for a triple by-pass i had three years ago. Most of my research is done through Diabetes-UK and i recommend it to all diabetics i meet. I must admit, when i was diagnosed and little information given to me, did not take it seriously for the first few months, until i watched an Oprah Winfrey TV program on a 44 year old American woman who had lost limbs and was on a kidney machine because she had the same attitude as me. WAKE UP CALL, thank you Oprah. Thank you Diabetes - UK

Hi,
Are you in Johannesburg, or where do you reside if still in South Africa ?
As a fellow South African, I can possibly give you some ideas
:)

As a type 2, I do not take any insulin, and have not ever experienced a full blown Hypo.
I would think, that if I had one, I would not take any Diabetes related medication, but see no harm in contusing with Blood Pressure and the Statin.
I believe you would want to get your Blood Glucose level up by eating some form of Sugar/cool Drink etc., and testing your levels until you got to a normal level Over 6 ? and then continue the following day as normal.
Don't know if you know of a Mail Order Co in Cape Town (Delite Foods) that market Sachets of Glucose for Diabetics, in event of a Hypo ?
They also supply a range of Sugar free products (Jelly, Jams etc).
I'm certain others will reply as well with advice

Hi, thanks for your response and advice. I live in Inchanga, valley of a thousand hills, KZN.
I must admit, when the doc put me on insulin, i threw all my toys out of the window, however, have since realised, the best advise given, echoed by many including Jenny Russell from Diabetes S.A. KZN.
Thanks for coming back to me

Don't know if you are on Discovery Medical Aid, but on certain plans they pay for you to go to the CDE
http://www.cdecentre.co.za/#ad-image-3
This gets you access to a range of Medical Advisors on Diabetes.( Doctors, dieticians, Podiatrists etc at no cost)
The Main Centre is in Jhb, but they have groups country wide.
May be worth considering, I have just started with them,
Come back if you need more info.
I Stay in Randburg, as you probably guessed
