Is this unusual? My first hypo!

Had usual tea and slice of toast(9pm), took 10 units Lantos at 11pm and BG was 7.7.
At 11.45pm got up happy to get to bed but I could smell fish (herring to be precise).
I knew there was no fish in the house, I felt dizzy, sweaty, unsteady and apparently white as a sheet. My wife got me to sit as I was getting shaky while she fed me jelly babies, ginger nuts, glass of milk because my BG was now 2.1(at midnight).
10 minutes later my BG was back to 7.7 so I had a banana and retired with normal BG in the morning.

Hypos are fairly common and normal amongst diabetics. The key is to try and minimise them as much as possible.

Was there anything out of the ordinary for that day? Such as increased activity levels, stress?

If you had your tea at 9pm you would still have had bolus insulin in your system up to five hours after the injection. It's possible that you bolused too much for that meal and went to bed when the insulin was still bringing your BG down. In this case, lower than you'd want.

It may help if you eat dinner earlier in the evening so that you leave a good amount of time between the meal and going to bed. This way, you are more likely to go to sleep with a stable BG that's not being influenced by your last bolus injection.

Good luck,
Grant

Thanks Grant. I called my diabetic nurse and she spoke to my consultant. He wants me to stop Metformin (500mg x2) altogether as they are mainly required by overweight sufferers.
I was surprised as my BG levels had dropped from 7.7 to 2.1 in 45 minutes.
Hoping the experts are experts.

Sugar - So the Metformin I have been taking for the last 15 years might have been a waste of time! I will enquire - Thank you.
