Hi, my husband had to ring 999 early Saturday morning as I was having a hypo my bloods were 1.7. They used a glucopen on me and within minuets I was feeling reletvly normal. I was in hospital for 24 hours.
My question is does anybody know if you can get the glucopen on prescription ?????
Many thanx.x

hello,

you can, its called Glucogen, I haven't ordered one on my prescription, but you can get them from the pharmacy, thats the injection type, or do you mean glucogel? I get that on my prescription to ! I hope this helps you.

xx

@Janestocks make sure to mention your nasty hypo to your DSN. I'm sure they will want to see you after that to check whether there is anything that needs reviewing to stop it happening again (course, it might just be one of those unfortunate things, but no harm checking). At the same time, they will be able to run through the glucogen injection, how to make it up and how to administer it it and general first aid hypo treatment tips with your husband which might give both of you a bit of peace of mind after what sounds like a horrible experience for you both having to call an ambulance.

Hope you are feeling ok now and that your husband is feeling proud of himself for looking after you so well.

Its called GlucaGen Hypo Kit. Very easy to use there is a diagram showing you how to use it stuck to the inside of the lid of the plastic box. The leaflet also explains clearly how to use it.

Your nurse may have an expired one that she uses as a training tool which you could also do when one of yours eventually expires.

My dsn recommended this to me after a 999 hypo. Didn't pursue it at the time, are they prescription only and do they have long storage life please?

It's available on prescription. It lasts upto 18 months out of the fridge provided it is still in date. So potentially much longer if stored in a fridge within date.
