I have just had my second hypo in 2 days my sugars r dropping from 12.2 to 3,7 why is it so low so quick i have been diagnosed for a week now and this is the 2nd time

Hi are you type 1 or 2, what meds are you on, for me I am on gliclazide and that can take my sugar levels down from around 8.5 to 3.6 if I have a late lunch or like the other night I had a turkey omelette and had no carbs with it (normally have wholemeal bread with it), and that sent my BS down.

I am type 1 i am on novarapid 3 times and levermir at night i am thinking maybe i never ate enough for my tea and my body didn't,have enough carb although i did have rice do u think,i should, maybe have a sandwich before i take my night time insulin

I am type 2 and have no experience of insulin usage and how much to take and what food to eat in relation to amount of insulin used. I will pass to the ones who know what to do in this area.

What time did you drop from/to and when was your last dose of quick acting given before the reading of 12. Also, are you more active when this happens?

Sorry, was your high reading of 12. Before your lunch. Had qa insulin with lunch and dropped low by 5.30?

Ok, sounds like too much qa given to the carbs you ate for tea as you had a very quick drop within 2 hours. As you are newly diagnosed you are probably on set doses and not carb counting yet which is something you need to learn. if you are on set doses at meal times have you been given an amount of carbs to eat with the meal?

I am on set doses i went to see my dn yest and i asked about carbs and she just said eat what i normally eat and not to worry she upped both my insulin's because i haven't been lower than 12 until lunch time today even the hypo i had yest i was around 12.2 again

Eating what you normally eat is fine if you eat exactly the same meals, same size, do the same activity every day etc. however in time you will learn to adjust for different size meals, activity etc. the first thing to get right would be your basal (long acting) correct, as if this is too high/low you will be having big swings in sugar levels. Probably seems a long way away as I can remember thinking I am never going to be able to do this. Amazing how quickly we adapt and learn. Regular testing and monitoring at the start will be a big help also. Any questions/concerns please ask, great help here

Thank you Brett you feel as though it only happens to you at the start don't you but i will get it sorted i am determined thanks again xx

No problem, you seem determined to get on top of it which is fab. Do ask your your dsn about getting on a dafne course (dose adjustment for normal eating). As for bedtime levels and a snack before bed, will depend on your pre bed reading and if you have any qa left. My advice on diagnosis was if below 8 have a small 10~15 carb snack, and see what your level is in the morning and adjust basal from there.
