Hi. I've recently been diagnosed with hormonal insulin resistance. Started low carb diet. Due to start metformin today after GP visit. Been having hypos around 3 am the last few nights. My hubby works nights so was fortunate that the dog realised I was having a hypo and woke me up. Any tips please? Had a glass of skimmed milk and two digestive biscuits to cure hypo. Many thanks

Lauren, if you are hypoing, the first thing you should eat or drink is fast acting glucose. Tablets or lucozade. Skimmed milk is relatively slow in this context.

Will be sure to get some supplies in today thanks. Endocrinologist advised against using lucozade until I start measuring my blood glucose. He also thinks that I'm going hypo at above ten as my insulin resistance levels were so great. Also drank a glass of apple juice with the milk.

As a prediabetic, and I assume not on meds, you don't really need to be treating false hypos - what you are experiencing is not a hypo, it is the natural lowering of your blood glucose levels from too high to more normal.

@tim2000s is spot on. What your experiencing is hypo symptoms as your body thinks it's hypo. The trick now is to get those high numbers down gradually so your body starts recognising a dangerous hypo. Your highs have been around for too long and have confused your system. It will improve greatly on metformin but low carb diets help hugely too. In your case lower carb intake will give you the help you need. It's a job only you can do.
I look forward to your success story. :-)

There's a couple threads around and I asked about the hypo issue on your other one? Just for your reassurance Lauren, you will not drop into a dangerous coma, and hence you don't need to "treat" these false hypos as such. They can feel awful so often a small snack of some cheese or nuts can help to even things out. It's really important you don't start diving to get Lucozade, pure fruit juices, biscuits or anything like that can it will just send your bg shooting very high and the whole rigmarole will start over again - plus it isn't medically necessary. Your reduction in carbs should help things along:)
