Hi all. I have a quick question. About 10 minutes before dinner I had a hypo so I treated myself by having a can of Coca Cola. I had my meal and dessert. after I counted all my carbs and done my insulin. In my carb count I included everything I ate as well as the coke I had for my hypo. About 2 1/2 - 3 hrs later I had another hypo. Now the question is, do I include hypo treatment into my carb count if I have a hypo before a meal?

Well if I had a full can of coke I would. If I'd had a couple of jelly babies then no.

That’s what I don’t understand because I had the whole thing, a bag of crisps and a pack of veg noodles and I got the carbs down perfectly yet I had a hypo

Does that happen often? It could be your basal if so. But if it was a one off have you done more exercise than usual? Or it could just be one of those odd diabetes things.

I think it depends on how much hypo treatment you had. I probably wouldn't count the first 10g, because I'd need that just to get out of hypoland, but would count the rest. (But then I usually only need 10g because a little carb goes a long way for me.) If you count all your hypo treatment then you're definitely just going to go back to hypo levels, because your calculation assumes you want to go back to the same level you started out at.

Hi @orry-kaplan ,

How long since your last meal did you have "dinner?" Is it possible you still have a little bolus on board from that.?
How low were you?

I would have subtracted the amount for the hypo, so the first 15g for me i wouldn’t have bolused for. If you get carb counting perfect then your blood sugar after the meal will go back to the level it was before you took the insulin. You were hypo so it put you back to hypo level.
