Hi all.
I have been a type 1 diabetic for 6 years. I am on Lantus for my basal insulin which is currently taken in split doses.
9am: 4 units
9pm: 26 units
I use Novarapid and carb count and my ratio is 1 unit to 10g of carbs. My correction dose is 1 unit to bring me down 1mmol.
I realise that I will sound like a useless diabetic but my recent HBA1C result was 7.8.....I have just temporarily lost the plot as quite alot of stress going on at home.
Not sure if anyone can shed any light but this is my problem....In January I started slimming world.....which has clearly brought my sugar levels down massively as eating really good food. I have lost weight and adjusted my insulin accordingly with my diabetic health team advising me along the way. I used to take it all at night but I was having night hypos and high daytimes so have adjusted it to this which has worked well. Anyway...I came off the wagon and ate a shedload of rubbish for 2 weeks (I know....)So my insulin had to go up to bring my morning levels down. So at the minute, I have been back on the slimming world plan for 2 days. Yesterday I ate well, but not as much as I usually do. Last night I ate my tea at 730pm (boiled rice 150g and homemade chilli filled with veg) So really I should have taken 15 units of insulin. I forgot to take it and realised at 10pm that I needed to take it. I suddenly noticed the signs of a hypo and quickly checked my sugar levels. Levels were 3.2. I had fast acting sugar (Lucozade/Jelly babies and glucose tablets) to hand so had some of these. Checked levels 15 minutes later and they were 3.0. I had more sugar, and a couple of slices of toast. Finally 1 hour later they rose to 12.2. I went to bed as felt exhausted. Set my alarm for 12am and checked them again, they were now 26.4. I checked them again at 445am and they were 24.3. Finally I got up at 7am and they were 17.1. Just before breakfast they were: 16.1 I had breakfast (2 slices of wholemeal toast, beans and mushrooms) and took 9 units to aim to get my levels down to around 7mmol. I didn't take extra for the meal as I wasn't sure if my fast acting needs might have changed and didn't want to overdose. I have checked my sugar levels 1 hour later and they are at 9.9.
So. I am not sure if I need to reduce my evening lantus, I am thinking I do..to possibly 20 or 22. I know it takes 3 days for my levels to be change but I am certain I need much less. Although my waking levels are about 13?! Even whilst taking 26 units. My 4 units seems ok in the day, but I just feel confused. Can anyone help or shed any light on this? I have called my health team but I am just waiting for the call back which to be honest may not come today!!
Thank you in advance.
