Hi, I've been type 1 for five years but haven't taken it seriously till about six months ago. I'm working really hard at staying on top of my BG but had a terrible hypo the other night dropping to 1.7. I'm finding it difficult to recover from it emotionally and although my family are supportive they don't understand. Any advice?

Really sorry to hear that, it feels awful doesn't it. Like you, when I've had a really bad one like that it has taken me several days to get back to feeling alright again. I don't think it is only emotions, it's quite a shock to the physical body too.

Everyone is different so I really don't know the answer. For me, my basal insulin was a tiny bit too high and so when I gave the right bolus or a little too much for the carbs I was eating, I'd drop through the floor and then to get up I'd have to have sweet drink, loads of dates, a banana etc and then I'd be too high. Adjusting it down only by one unit to 6/6 (am and pm) has evened it out although I still have blips and can't see why. But at least i'm not ricocheting between 1.6 and 28 as I was before !

But you could look at what you had to eat that day, if you tend to go low at night then perhaps have some carbs that are slow releasing before bedtime; check you're not having too much insulin for your evening meal. Check your BS before you go to sleep and if it's too low, maybe have a banana before you sleep.

I'm sure other people will have some ideas and answer you soon. It is very hard - I've found that people who don't have T1 even though they're truly sympathetic, can't really grasp the angst of a hypo like that. Good luck.

Thank you jgordon5. I've felt a bit isolated by it.
I know what happened. Took my night time lantus in my thigh as usual but I must have caught a vein as I went from 8.9 to 1.7 in about 20 minutes.
The plan now is to take lantus held an hour before bed so that if it happens again I'm more aware of what's happening.
My sugars have never been below 2 before this

Thank you tim2000s. I'll be keeping a record of my night time hypo's from now on!
