I have been type 1 diabetic for 44years just lately i cant tell when im going hypo ,i have done a blood test of 1.6 and not had any symptoms of hypo, most of the time i just get like a flashing in my head ( only way i can explain it ) Then i only have seconds to get some glucose if it goes any further i cant hold anything because of the musculartwitching. I have been to the doctors but never get to see the same doctor, and am told just to do more blood tests, ant comments will be gratelt appreciated... thx

Hi Humaject!

I believe hypo warnings can disappear if you run your BG quite tight all the time. What was your last HbA1C? I run my BGs in the 5s as much as possible, and the consultant always tells me that levels like that can lead to loss of hypo awareness. I still have good hypo awareness, but I've only been diabetic for 3 years. Most people on the forum suggest that if your hypo warnings go, then running your BG a bit higher for a while can bring them back again.

Hope you get it sorted out, it must be very frightening.

took a long time to write this so kinda covering whats already been said sorry...

loss of hypo symptoms i.e sweating, confusion, panic, anger, etc can come about after frequent low sugars. you see the brain thinks that this lower state of sugars is normal for your body state and thus stops giving the warning signs for such figures. My specialist suggested that for one month i should reduce my basal rate slightly and instead of aiming for sugar readings of between 4-6 i should aim for between 7-9 or even 10 this raised blood sugar for one month will help your brain establish that sugars of 3.5 to 4 or possibly lower are putting your body at risk and is not its normal levels. if you reduce your basal rate and find your not having any hypos but are getting better readings such as 4-6 then it may still be worth talking to your specialist about raising your target levels and further reducing your basal rate to ensure your hypo awarness returns because clearly you wish to avoid the personal health risks of loosing conciousness etc further more the DVLA or DMV will take your driving license away affecting getting to your work and general commuting not to mention possible loss of job the list is endless.

by raising the target sugar levels from 4-6 to 7-9 in just over a month you will find that hypo symptoms begin to return- not that you want to be having any more but the theory is if you do you will feel them much sooner and be in a better state of mind to be able to deal with it quickly and by yourself.

as always discuss with your specialist before undertaking such changes as they may lead to other complications in your individual scenario this is mearly a suggestion.

best of luck!

Well if you drive you need to stop before your licence is pulled from you.

Have you considered running your blood sugars higher for a while, this is a well known tactic?
Other option is to try diferent insulin's. Perhaps go back to animal insulin and see if that helps.
