Stupid question to ask but tonight I didn't eat much for dinner and just before I was due to go out swimming I felt really shaky, sweaty and not with it so I tested my sugar and it was 3.0. I have had a small glass of lucozade and a piece of toast and my sugars are now up to 4.2, is that high enough now or do they need to be a little higher? No one has ever said what you should be aiming for after a hypo if you get my drift!

hya fiona
when having an hypo the rule of thumb is 15g carbs, either lucozade, gluco tabs, some have jelly babies even, if you feel no better after 15 minutes check again, if still hypo have more, if not and you arent due food for a few hrs try toast or a sandwich, if you are due a meal soon u should be ok
hope this helps :D

Hi fiona
Hypos are hellish - though a good excuse to eat ****!

Apologies for not knowing but are you type 1 or 2? My understanding is that in type 2 liver dumps can help so if you are above 4 now I wouldnt worry too much though I stand to be corrected by our many type 2's!

If you are type 1 or an insulin user and you think you might continue to drop still (ie insulin still floating about that might bring you down again) I personally would try and get it up a bit. In and of itself 4.2 is fine so if you are happy to leave it there then do so if you feel it will stay there. You might find it continues to rise depending on how soon after you test. I always panic and NEVER wait the 15 mins you are meant to, but thats just me!

Get the headache tablets ready though, my hypos are always followed by belters of headaches

Lx

Hi

I'm a type 2 so I don't think I shall eat anymore then as I expect it will continue to rise! Just rechecked and its still 4.2, at least I feel better than I did although I still feel a bit out of sorts, suppose I should count myself lucky that I didn't have it whilst swimming!

Thanks for the advice, at least I enjoyed my slice of toast with lemon curd on it! (My reasoning was I needed it!)
