Hi everyone,

Have just joined the forum, basically having read this thread!

I have just completed my first week back on Porcine neutral, having used lantus for 10+ years and humalog. I am 34, been type 1 for 27 years, always been diligent with control, and suffer many of the syptoms listed on this thread - chronic exhaustion, hand pain, poor digestion and now daily migraine. My HbA1c is usually 7 or there abouts.

For the past 6 months I have been pumping Humalog, and must be honest the flexibility and control has been really good. I asked my consultant if I could try porcine in the pump and he was helpful, but reserved and sceptical. He is interested to know how I get on, but did quote the lack of medical evidence suggesting anolgues are harmful.....I am being open minded, in some ways I want the flexibility of humalog again, but I need to feel better.

For me there has been no 'night and day' difference, though I read somewhere that it took one lady a month to notice a change and that it was a good change! So I have everything crossed.

I shall post back after a month and share what my experiences have been......hopefully it will help others!

Take care.

Hi:

I am an animal insulin user since 1970. I am now also on neutral and isophane. I had problems adjusting because I did not understand what the two types were for. Got mixed messages and information that made no sense to me, but they do now. Despite poor control for a period during my lifetime; ups and downs, lows and highs, good control later but still kicking, it is far better than the human stuff doctor's tried to pass onto me. They all made me sick and I passed out. As a T1, It is your choice what insulin you use, not the doctor's or the specialists. I see a really good T1 specailist Nurse at my hospital that I transferred to some time ago (bless her). She put up with my **** and listened. I recognised all the symptomes all of you described and have suffered from all of them, and more to this day, but I would recommend animal insulin to any T1. Human insulin is far cheaper than animal insulin which is why pharmacies pushed it onto doctor's back in the 80's. Don't blame them. They are good people, some of them. The female doctor's especially-attractive as hell. I wish!

This brings a question to my mind though, about the different types of insulin's out there..why are there so many different types? Energy levels with animal insulin is better than with non-animal insulins, but as with all insulins, there are side effects to be considered. I think most of you have
already experienced them at one point or another in your lives. Before I leave, can I ask a
question?

Did Professor Banting save us or make things worse by prolonging the inevitable? Were we better off without insulin, thus reducing the long term complications and dreadedness that accompanies it later in life? A taboo subject? My BG's are low now and much better than they have been for a long time, but I cannot help but wonder....2010..no insulin still......signing out - Lost soul
