Hi, I have been on pork insulin for over twenty years and have the cartridges that fit in to the pen I have. When I went to collect my message today I found a packet of 5 pre filled pens called Novomix 30 Flex pen. On calling the pharmacy the dispenser could not confirm if this insulin was the same as I am currently on (I think not). She said there is a national shortage of pork mixtard??? Can anyone advise if this insulin is the same as I'm currently using? Thanks very much :)

@laburnum123_ This absolutely isn't. It's human analogue insulin and probably doesn't have the profile you are used to as well. Stay well back. You might want to give the GP a call...

Hi,

As far as I know. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong.) your chemist must dispense exactly what you are prescribed..
I totally agree with @tim2000s the Novomix 39 may not work the same way as the medication your used to....

Consult your doctor..

As others have stated that is a major error. Report the pharmacist. Also ring the insulin manufacturer and ask what the situation is. I haven't looked but surely there would have been an alert issued for a shortage.
Try a different pharmacy for starters and if a problem still then the simple solution is to have the Isophane and neutral in separate pens and inject it that way or use vials and a syringe as both can be mixed in the same syringe obviously.

Give these http://iddt.org/ people a ring,

Hi, a big thanks to all who replied to my thread. I haven't used the pre filled pens but when I contacted the pharmacy I was informed their in house "Diabetic Nurse" prescribed them as apparently there is a "national shortage of pork mixtard insulin" (that's what one of the dispensers at surgery told me). I'm thinking of going to see the head GP at the surgery as I am sure I'm not the only person in this situation and this nurse could have made things dangerous for me.

There is a shortage of Insuman which is a completely different insulin http://iddt.org/news/insuman-shortages.

Wochardt are the manufactures of your insulin and there is no shortage http://www.wockhardt.co.uk/ There is also a contact number at the bottom of the page.
Bottom line is that it is negligent and illegal for the pharmacy to change your prescription. How do they know you have no adverse reactions to the human insulin they dispensed in error?
