HI All,
I am a new diabetic (male in mid thirties) and wanted to check about benefits of having 1x500 Metformin a day even though the blood sugar without aren't very different.
my history:
I was diagnosed with diabetes in Feb-2014 with 17.5 BS, high ketones and 12.5 hba1c (noticed I had lost 10kgs in 2 months so went to see GP).
GP prescribed 2 glyclazides and 3x500mg metformins a day (even though the nruse said I a definite LADA and should start insulin right away). I listened to the GP and stated with pills and reasonably low barb diet (about 50carbs per meal home cooked). My blood sugars came down quite quickly to normal levels in days and were going low (to 3.1mmol) so GP asked me to stop Glyclazides within 2 weeks and just take 2x500 metformins. Then since my fasting BS was regularly around 4.7mmol and post meal was no more than 7.5, GP asked me to come down to 1 Metformin after 4 weeks. All this time, I had started running regularly and was having home cooked food all the time (ah and no beers which i used to down about 10 pints/week before diagnosed). So from diagnosis to progressing to 1 metformin was 2 months. Then I noticed that if I skipped the Meformin on a day my BS wouldn't be any different than earlier so I met a specialist and he said that 1 Met is not going to make any difference so it is as good as taking nothing. I have stopped taking Metformin since 2-3 months now and my BS is still in normal range (4.7-5.0 mmol fasting and no more than 7.5 post meal). My hba1c history is (Feb=12.5, June=5.7 or 39, Oct = 5.3 or 34). N
Now I have stopped taking Met and am having normal food and eat out too once in a while (and a few beers) but my fasting and post meal BS are still within normal range. I am constantly told that taking 1 Met is of no harm and I should continue taking it instead of putting load on my pancreas. Those who tell me this dont have any scientific explanation but the fact that I was diagnosed with Dx which means my pancreas has taken a beating already and putting load on it will not help. So the question is - do I really need to restart my 1 met a day? I am indeed keeping an eye on my BS levels 6 times a day (call me mad but its like I've got this new gadget that I cannot ignore after having meals). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
many thanks
kris
