HI All,

I am a new diabetic (male in mid thirties) and wanted to check about benefits of having 1x500 Metformin a day even though the blood sugar without aren't very different.

my history:

I was diagnosed with diabetes in Feb-2014 with 17.5 BS, high ketones and 12.5 hba1c (noticed I had lost 10kgs in 2 months so went to see GP).

GP prescribed 2 glyclazides and 3x500mg metformins a day (even though the nruse said I a definite LADA and should start insulin right away). I listened to the GP and stated with pills and reasonably low barb diet (about 50carbs per meal home cooked). My blood sugars came down quite quickly to normal levels in days and were going low (to 3.1mmol) so GP asked me to stop Glyclazides within 2 weeks and just take 2x500 metformins. Then since my fasting BS was regularly around 4.7mmol and post meal was no more than 7.5, GP asked me to come down to 1 Metformin after 4 weeks. All this time, I had started running regularly and was having home cooked food all the time (ah and no beers which i used to down about 10 pints/week before diagnosed). So from diagnosis to progressing to 1 metformin was 2 months. Then I noticed that if I skipped the Meformin on a day my BS wouldn't be any different than earlier so I met a specialist and he said that 1 Met is not going to make any difference so it is as good as taking nothing. I have stopped taking Metformin since 2-3 months now and my BS is still in normal range (4.7-5.0 mmol fasting and no more than 7.5 post meal). My hba1c history is (Feb=12.5, June=5.7 or 39, Oct = 5.3 or 34). N

Now I have stopped taking Met and am having normal food and eat out too once in a while (and a few beers) but my fasting and post meal BS are still within normal range. I am constantly told that taking 1 Met is of no harm and I should continue taking it instead of putting load on my pancreas. Those who tell me this dont have any scientific explanation but the fact that I was diagnosed with Dx which means my pancreas has taken a beating already and putting load on it will not help. So the question is - do I really need to restart my 1 met a day? I am indeed keeping an eye on my BS levels 6 times a day (call me mad but its like I've got this new gadget that I cannot ignore after having meals). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

many thanks
kris

Hi. From what you say about your weight loss at diagnosis I would also have guessed LADA. It's quite surprising that with that sudden weight loss you have become stable on effectively no meds but a good diet. Metformin has very little effect on blood sugar and helps mostly with those who are overweight and insulin resistant. It's not going to make any measureable difference in my amateur opinion whether you take 500gm Met or not. It's a very safe drug and has no effect on the pancreas. Amongst a few other minor things it makes the liver reduce it's glucose output. I would just keep doing what you are doing and decide whether to take the Met or not.

Thanks Diabell. Even atleast 2 doctors and 2 endocrinologists were surprised. I will probably keep off Met until i really need it. I have lost a bit of control on my sugar/alcohol though but am hoping to be as disciplined as i can. I guess checking BS every day should help.

has anyone else had similar situation as me and how long were you able to keep off meds?

many thanks

My situation is quite similar to yours, I was diagnosed in august of this year and put on 2Xmets a day. It was 16.2 on diagnosis with a1c of 142, I lost about 10 kilos in 3 or 4 months and went to the doc, i was diagnosed T2, diabetic nurse called me and checked my ketones but I had .01 or something so she confirmed it is T2, I am not going above 6 although my a1c was 46 which was done quite recently which is still in prediabetic range but I dont eat a lot of carbs or drink and stay well within the non diabetic range as per my meter.
Unfortunately i have put that weight back on as having to eat some more fats to replace my carbs, I used to wear 34 trouser and dropped to 30, although I have gained the weight back on I still wear 30 32 which sometimes do surprise me a bit.

Thanks Brettsza - quite amazed by the similarities. I have put on a bit of weight too I think because i keep treating myself a bit more because of normal a1c and BS numbers. I also run atleast 2-3 times a week about 6 kms. Because my antibodies test came negative. I asked my GP and consultant for c-peptide test to check how much insulin am I making but they botched the test and I didn't chase it up. i guess if i am a Type2 then i might be making enough or more insulin anyway
