I had some blood tests done about ten days ago and got a shock that my fasting level was 173. The doctor said I was Pre diabetic. Panic mode I saw the urologist as the reason I went was because of frequent going to the bathroom. He gave me the HAVpBC1 test which came back at 5.71. Since being told I have gone on a low carb diet, more exercise although I am not really overweight, just perhaps a kilo. I have started monitoring my blood levels and the fasting one in the morning has risen. I am very confused on all the type of diabetics there is and frankly quite frightened as always been healthy. I have always had high cholesterol, seems to run in the family and do not take any drugs for this. Every time I use the meter it seems pretty high. I am actually on holiday in the US for another week but don’t feel my normal self. Any advice welcome.
One fasting glucose test doesn't really tell you anything. When you get back home, ask your GP for a HbA1c as soon as you can, that's a bloodglucose average of 3 months. It'll tell you where you're at, prediabetes, diabetic, etc. Make sure you get the actual number, not just a label like "fine" or "borderline". If you're urinating so much you're seeing someone for it, you want help with this. If you're not medicated, just keep low carbing for the duration of your holiday. That means
no bread, cereal/muesli, pasta, rice, corn, potatoes, anything made with grain, and no fruit either, save for berries. Just stick with eggs, meat, poultry, fish, above ground veggies and leafy greens. Olives, cheese, double cream, they're all good for you. Can you tell us what a typical day looks like right now? You say your morning glucose is high, but we can't tell how much of that is dawn phenomenon (your liver dumping glucose to get you started) and how much is your dinner the night before. And, also... Have you been having trouble sleeping? Laying awake with worry? Because if you're not sleeping well, the liver just starts dumping glucose that much earlier. Could be a very logical explanation right there. Just keep in mind if you change the carb content of your meals you could feel a little flu-ish as your body gets used to not running on those so much, and your eyesight might change a little, for a week or two.
Right now there's not much else you can do, but as you're on holiday I don't know if you're eating out or cooking yourself. If you go to a fast food chain or a restaurant, ask for salads to replace fries, and there's no shame in requesting a bunless burger. No-one'll bat an eye, whether it's McD's or Five Guys. Just go with meat/fish/poultry, sparking water, tea, coffee, not too many condiments as they're sugary too (Mayo is fine, but I can't call what the yanks use mayo.

). Take a breath and try to enjoy your vacation! Stress just ups your bloodsugars, and I assume you're there to have a good time. So have a good time.
You're going to be okay, whatever way this turns out. You've got us, and quite a few of us have put our T2 in remission: medication and complication free. So even if you are leaning towards diabetes, when test results come in, you're not alone. We've got you.

if any type at all. Still, you can ask your doc for a C-peptide and a GAD test, while you're at it anyway. And if you start losing too much weight on low carb, as you have little to spare, have some walnuts or pecans. That should stall the weightloss. It sure did mine!
