Hi IrishNan and welcome. Have you been told whether you now have a diagnosis of diabetes. If so it maybe that your level of 48 needs to be considered carefully along with the other abnormalities your tests have thrown up. @Bluetit1802 knows a bit about this and will tell you about another test for diabetes which maybe more accurate for you. The name of it escapes me at the mo, sorry.
In the meantime I’ll tag in @daisy1 for her useful info post.

Fructosamine, that’s the one!Would that be the Fructosamine test that you are thinking of or the OGGT, perhaps?
Thank you so much
I have been told nothing my notes that can be read on line suggests a GP has spoken to me NOT so.
but the moving forward plan is more bloods 2-4 weeks but that again has not been told me it is my ability to
read my test notes on line
I have many urine tests over many months due to a kidney stone and nothing was picked up and so this is a shock.
I have had high pressure (eye) for 10 years that is in my DNA in a big way
and also likely that I have iron overload which can cause diabetes. My liver has had an upset since I was 15 ! but nothing conclusive has ever been decided
I might even be on the wrong web site and wasting every ones time but …..
If only that was as simple as it seems. Due to GP staff shortages there are no GP appointments for weeks unless it is an
emergency and unlikely this will be seen as such.
I was thinking of this myself but was hoping your wisdom would help settle me while I try to get correct medical attention
My role as a family carer also excludes me from getting an appointment when I am not caring. Domiciliary carers here are as rare as GPs
The information given has empowered me as it is one more reason for my liver to be looked into correctly
I don't know how I feel - to be told that my caring role has compromised my health when there is no care to support Family member or me is hardMay I ask, apart from the anxiety that this must provoke, how you are feeling?
I agree with Rachox. A cousin of mine has had this condition for years and it is important to get it diagnosed and treated to avoid further damage to the pancreas and other organs. I would ring up your GP surgery and tell them you are worried. You might be able to get a telephone appointment to get further explanation.
Hi and thank you for any support you can offer
I had a blood test that told me my blood sugar was suddenly 48 and that my ferritin iron blood was also high. My eye pressure once very stable has suddenly spiked. I understand this could all be due to the iron overload. Has anyone else this problem?
I am new and confused!
Hi @IrishNan and welcome!
If your ferritin is high, then I suggest that you do a google for something called haemocrhromatosis, also called Bronze Diabetes.
It is usually caused by carrying genes that prevent your body from removing excess iron from your bloodstream, which means that the iron builds up a bit, and if it gets high enough, can cause damage to other organs and even cause diabetes.
Of course, there are a lot of variables there. There are several different genes which can cause this condition, and the build up of excess iron can be slight (which is what I have) all the way up to very high. Levels tend to get higher with age, with proplems rarely showing up until the person has reached their 50s-60s and upwards. Particularly post menopause for women.
I would suggest that you get the result of your ferritin test from your surgery, so that you have it for comparison with future tests.
There is actually a huge range that counts as 'normal' with ferritin. And then a fair leeway before the damage starts. And the treatment for high ferritin is blindingly simple for most people - occasional blood lettings.
So please do not start worriting or panicking at this stage.
I have had high ferritin levels for the last 2 tests, and my doc is just keeping an eye on it, with no further action at this point.
If your second result is also high, or higher, there is a well organised treatment pathway.
Here is a link to start you off with reading about it
