Hi everyone, I have been type 1 diabetic for 10 years now and have been on novorapid and levemir for 5 years. Recently my body has felt different, I've been feeling like my blood sugars are really low when they are around 4.5 and have been needing more insulin. I am due to see the diabetic specialist on Monday but just wondering if anyone else has felt like this and what caused it?

I know exactly what you mean, my sugars used to be high loads and was feeling hypo round 6/7 and having lucozade cos I felt low.

Now I'm slightly more controlled I'm not getting hypo signs tell 3. Thou that said today I felt very shaky test blood and was 10! Not sure what was happening there.

Yeah it's really weird isn't it. My sugars have been really high over the last fews weeks and i'm taking a lot more insulin that would usually make me pretty low but its doing nothing. Got the clinic on monday so hopefully they'll be able to help.

Also if your insulin is doing nothing you could need to rotate your injection sites :)

Sugars being high is prob why you feel low when you're not.
Thou whatever I do never seems to make sense haha sometimes it works, sometimes it don't, well most times it don't haha.

Hopefully, fingers crossed for you

When bg has been running higher for some time you can experience something what they call False Hypo's, basically this just means when your bg levels begin to stabilise your body mistakenly thinks your going hypo at these lower levels, in time the body resets itself so try not to worry.

Good luck on Monday and do make sure you mention this.

If you're BG is 4.5, you're technically hypo - and certainly illegal to drive at the time (and for up to 45 minutes after reaching 6mmol/l from a hypo)... you don't need more insulin if you're 4.5!

This could be a number of things, e.g.:
  • Stress (including that caused by stressing about hi-BGs!)
  • Illness
  • Weight gain
  • Change of lifestyle (e.g. reduced activity)
  • Started smoking
  • Injection sites
Have a think back over the last few weeks, has anything changed to help trigger this off? Good luck in finding out!

The only thing that has changed recently is I stopped smoking a month ago then all this started. I changed injection sites to see if that would make a difference. Hopefully will be able to get it sorted out soon

Well done you for giving up! It's as hard as giving up carbs to the carb-addicted :arghh:

I did the same around ...erm... 1999, I think, then went back on them (socially) on and off for about 2 years. Have been clear of them ever since :D

(You may find you're feeling a little agitated / tense since giving them up - nicotene is a soother, which may partially account for it.)

If you gave up smoking then your body's metabolism will have slowed down and you will need less energy/glucose. When you smoke your body works overtime trying to get rid of all the poisons. Now it has slowed down.

I gave up 25 years ago and my weight went ut of control. Problem is not that one eats any more, but body doesn't need it. Well maybe one does eat more because food tastes so much better.

Does this provide any clues as to what to do?
