I can't believe that I have gone from 58 to 38 in three month. Nurse says if I get below 31 then I'll come off their diabetic list altogether.

I thank each and every one of you guys for all your support, advice and ìn formation. You've literally given me my life back.

Which diet were you on as I would like to give it a go?

Hi, I'm 15 months post diagnosis for t2. After showing many signs of t2 I visited my doctor and found my HbA1c was 105. I was prescribed 4 Metformin a day and told that was just the start of a lifelong battle. After changing to a lower carb diet and eating things that were purported to be good for diabetes, 3 months later my HbA1c was down to 54. The doctor was needless to say flabbergasted! At 6 months I was down to 43 and after a year it was 39. I reduced my Metformin to 2 a day, went a little easier on myself with the diet and after 15 months it's at 40, yet the doctor suggested statins. I refused!

[QUOTE="... He then told me that if my total cholesterol remained 'high' on the next test (ie above 5 mmol) he would 'have to' prescribe statins - this despite the fact that my score of 5.2 would count as 'optimal' in most of Europe, Canada and Australia (he didn't know this, either).....

There was one study I saw recently where those with lower cholesterol rates (on a vegetable oil diet) had an increased chance of death.[/QUOTE]

Yes, I've seen a few studies that link very low cholesterol with an increased risk of mortality, though more research is definitely needed before correlation can be translated into causation. I think there is an increasing consensus, though, that 'total cholesterol' figures are fairly meaningless, as if you increase levels of 'good' cholesterol - ie high density lipoproteins - your total cholesterol figure will rise.

Hi @1954jessy and welcome to the forum. A HbA1c reading of 52 isn't very high, but it is in the diabetic range (47 and above), but as you can see from @supergirthuk's post, you can bring your figures down. A lot of people on this forum have done that by adopting a Low Carbohydrate High Fat approach to eating.
Have a read round the threads and you will get an idea of what you should be eating, and ask any questions you want. People on here are friendly and supportive.

I have been advised by my doctor if my next HBA1C drops below 32 from the 38 it was in my last one I will be taken off their diabetic register. I am obviously aiming to get this as low as possible but I will ask to stay on the list so I get the long term support I need to manage and control things in the coming years.

Yeah I think that's the best thing because now I might be wrong but once diagnosed with diabetes you will always have it ...just a question how did you drop your levels ? Cause when diagnosed 6/7 weeks ago my hba1c was 98 and my BG levels were in the high 20s low 30s now my BG levels are 13 (don't no what my hba1c is yet) and thats with metformin 500mg morning (but upping it next week) and gliclazide 160mg morning/evening and not forgetting eating more healthy/exercise and getting great support from forum but also I've had bad advice about low carb diet cause my district diabetic nurse adviced me not to just yet cause I suffer from chronic pancrease

VLCHF diet and exercise. 75% Fat, 20% Protein 5% Carb. I got an activity tracker which drove my step count up daily.

Always check with a healthcare professional before hand.

I've never chased my BG levels as my very low carb keeps me in ketosis.

I may be prone to being Diabetic but so is everyone. I will only remain Diabetic until guidelines defining the condition change or a cure is found.

As VLCHF is sustainable in my eyes and in my circumstances it is a cure at the moment.

People say well you can't eat the way you used to, and that is relatively true, but considering that damaged your body do you want to.

That is like saying to a man who lost a foot in a car accident not to use a prosthetic limb to walk again.

I think I am one of the lucky ones in that I think I caught it early on before too much damage was done. A brilliant source of support and advice is the Dietdoctor.com site and of course this forum. The main low carb program is good but for me it advises too high carb intake to adopt ketosis.

You will need to adapt the letter to the doctor provided by the low carb program and plead your case with them. They will need to manage your meds as you progress and hopefully you can get to a stage where you can come off them totally, hopefully your hcp will see improvements across the board and your pancreatitis deminishes.

All the best of luck with all your decisions going forward. Please consult your doctor and listen to their advise as they know your specific circumstance and what worked for me doesn't specifically mean it will work for you as my diabetes is specific to me as is my health and circumstances.

On the other hand, please don't let them palm you off because they can't be bothered to monitor your progress. If you approach it as it will save them money and time in the long run it may help (sorry but I'm not sure if you are an NHS patient or from abroad).

If you ask them to at least let you try it, assuming your pancreatitis will allow it (sorry but I don't know enough about pancreatitis to know if it is an option), as surely between a chronic condition that will just worsen and the hope of controlling and managing it via some lifestyle changes it has to be worth a go.

Thx for that my levels have come down from 30 to 15 and my nurse wants to up my gliclazide to 160mg morning/evening and also up metformin next week then when I go for Mir scan next week of pancrease because they think it might be the pancreatic duct so that's why I had the c-peptide and GAD test to see if I'm late type 1 or LADA if that makes sense........also I'm a nhs patient

Diabetes!
Hi all,
I was 'labelled' at the end of April with a subsequent hb1ac of 97 ..... Which at the time meant nothing, but I subsequently realised was high - and freaked!
I now have embarked on a major diet and exercise regime and have lost 3 stone to date (18st to 15st)
My next hb1ac I think is due in August - but ask what would be a realistic expectation to achieve at this test - any ideas - or is it how long is a piece of string?? I don't want to come away gutted if it is still high.
If it is any help my initial fasting finger prick test on diagnosis was 12, but one take a couple of weeks ago was 6.6.
I'm not doing my own readings - yet, and tbh, I'm still weighing up whether I want to do this.
Any advice or experience please??
Thx

I hope it all goes well. It sound a lot more complex than My situation sadly but it's not to say that there isn't a way back with help.

I know it is all very daunting but stick with it. I think you would be better off chatting to someone with more experience with pancreatitis. Message someone on the Dietdoctor.com site and see if they can help any.

Well done so far. I think the only thing I can say is try not to worry too much about what your next HBA1C will be as if you are low carbing and in ketosis it should be hopefully better but it will be what it will be and it will be your best indicator that you're on the right path.

I don't take readings either. I got a meter but decided id make a decision after my second HBA1C as to whether to start and the result was so encoraging I didn't bother starting. I am in ketosis and below 42 so happy days. I may need to use the meter eventually when I get to a weight where I need to maintain but that's a long way off yet.

Keep going and try not to stress as it is pointless and linked to causing and worsening our condition.
