I’ve just seen a pic of a urine dip which shows huge amounts of ketones and glucose. The person who the wee belongs to has lost huge amounts of weight, has all the classics symptoms, breath stinks of ketones and is 18 years old.

His mum showed the pic to a nurse who said it’s ok, and to get an appointment with the GP.

Is this really the quality of advice dished out by HCP’s these days?

A&E - better to be safe than sorry things can get really serious really quickly

Straight down A&E as if it turns into DKA it can kill as we know, what is this nurse thinking ***!

Even with my limited knowledge I would be hearing alarm bells all over the shop. I'm sure that you advised A&E.

I'm sorry but why are people taking pictures of urine dips? Then they show the picture to a nurse, is this an A+E nurse or a nurse who specialises in diabetes? If you're concerned enough to do a urine dip because of the symptoms listed then you should be more positive in your actions and either book an appointment with your GP ASAP or go to A+E.
@wiflib i appreciate your post and your concerns. Suppose the HCP's response had been OMG get to A+E asap, imagine the unnecessary panic that could have created. Saying it's ok and book to see a GP is a bit of a contradiction I feel, and the HCP didn't want to dismiss the patient or cause panic.
My wife is a nurse hence my views on subjects that apportion blame in there direction.

I’m a recently retired Midwife and I was surrounded by **** HCP’s all my working life, I even made a few mistakes myself. That boy could be dead by morning and not wanting to cause panic is a **** excuse.

The boy won’t go to A&E because he’s scared of needles. The irony.

So get him to A+ E then . For Christ sake someone do something instead of waiting for someone else to do it. Wasting time posting is a more **** excuse!

I don’t know who he is and I’m not his mother. His mother posted for advice on a forum and has been given it. She’s been told he could die but the nurse says it’s ok.

@wiflib . I fully understand your concerns and as a T1 I know what could lie in store for this young man. Yes maybe the HCP should have made the patient more aware of the seriousness of the condition. I just feel that when people like yourself start to show concern and give advice then the patient and in this case his mother need to take positive actions and not rely on suggestions on the dreaded internet. 27 yrs ago I was petrified of needles. Sadly sometimes it's do or die.
Hope I haven't upset you, anyone who has worked to help others like yourself has my upmost respect

One tries to understand (I do not) but this common aversion to needles is ridiculous. Mishit a nail as it goes thru your finger, have an injection when you go to the dentist, take a blood test, use a lancet to check your BG, during childbirth (when necessary) taking one for arthritis, cancer, and anything else

Must be frustration on my part but it is not a big deal. Minimal pain (stupidly low, like stabbing yourself with a nappy pin) or denial through an irrational fear.

Drives me nuts “oh I hate needles” yes, the vast majority of us do.
I really struggle having blood taken but it has to be done so I use my coping strategies (noise). B12 injections are a *****!
