Hi everyone, I'm not diabetic myself, but am in a relationship with a type 1 diabetic. I'm wanting to support her and keep her healthy, searching around there does't seem to be any support for those of us who love a diabetic. I've been to her support meetings with her and injected her... is there anyone out there to help us understand and help... my concern is to keep my girl as healthy as I can.

First of all, good on you mate- it's lovely to hear this, you clearly have a genuine care to look out for the best interests of your partner and that's a kind thing. :)

As I'm sure you already are, just being observant and aware of her health and condition is very important.. being able to identify small changes in behaviour/symptoms of lows or highs - because sometimes other's are able to spot the symptoms before we are even.

Could you please give an idea of her general health at the moment-

  • How long has she been T1?
  • What is her injection regime?
  • Does she count carbs?
  • Do you know what her HbA1c is? (Average)

Any other general info you could offer would be really useful- people here will chime in and offer some I'm sure.
Again, asking for advice like this is an honourable gesture- you sound like a gent!

Sorry for the delay, Katie has been diagnosed 11 years in January next year and is in fairly good health except the stress at work affects her.

She does two background injections... Levemir, morning and night and Novorapid injections before eating. DAFNE trained she does carb count and HbA1c is averaging 7.7 overall.

She doesn't hypo too much on the current regime, but I have in my mind the symptoms... I haven't seen a really bad hypo yet.
