I may need help with my mum

Hi everyone.

My mum is an unstable diabetetic. her readings vary from 5 or 6 in the morning to about 20 by the evening.

She has been in hospital etc for ages as they try to control it with every medication ever invented. Now she is being discharged and will be injected by District Nurses. I am so concerned as to if this will work outside of a hospital environment. Has anyone else got this degree of unstabe readings

Due to nhs cutbacks we don't all have facilities to test ourselves so wont all know if we have such swings! But you are obviously a caring daughter and I wish you all the luck you need and more, it must be hard to get your parents to do as they're told. My mother is type 2 and luckily makes an effort so it's slightly easier for me to tell her to make a bigger effort! Honestly good luck, it must be hard for you, only suggestion I have is if you take control of cooking and meal times?

If the new regime worked in hospital then it should work at home. The biggest difference at home is that mealtimes and portion sizes may be more variable. If your mum is able to do any 'exercise' ie walks a bit more then that can also make a difference.
I think it's important to try to keep the meals at regular times with the type of insulin she's probably using (also any scheduled snacks). Having the injections at the right time is also very important but that will be down to the efficiency of the team doing the injections.
