I need an idiots guide to getting C1 entitlement back

Hi,

Type 1 since the 70s, passed my test in the 80s, C1 entitlement was removed from my license when the law changed. I now need that entitlement back. I'm currently on a 3 year license.

I have a D2 form, D4 partially filled - waiting for a medical but don't know when I need to do this, and a Vdiab1 if required.

I have 90 days readings - at least twice daily - on an accu-check mobile.

Whats the actual process to get this done. (I find the instructions on the forms contradictory and DVLA don't want to answer phones and there webchat bot tells me to phone.)

Thanks

It’s, a long winded tick box nightmare of a process, I despise dealing with DVLA. You need to complete all the forms and medical and submit to DVLA. You will then need to be seen by your own hospital consultant who will have been sent forms to complete. If you pass this stage you then have to have an appointment with a DVLA consultant. Just make sure you have your meter at each appointment showing twice daily testing, and no missed days. I keep a DVLA meter with good readings on. No hypos requiring outside assistance is also a requirement. Initial process took about 6 months and normally about 3 months for annual renewal. Good luck Xx

Many thanks for the reply.

When you state "You need to complete all the forms and medical" , does this mean the D4 at this stage ?

So,

I get an appointment with a doctor who fills in the D4 (I pay for this one)

I send the D2 and D4 to the DVLA

DVLA then send my normal diabetic consultant a form to fill in (VDIAB2), they send it back to DVLA (they pay for this one)

DVLA then send me to a DVLA consultant (they pay for this one)

I get license.

Do I need a VDIAB1 ?

When I used to drive vehicles and rather large trailers it was in the days of urine testing !

Yes, i completed the D2 and D4 and sent both on initial application. I can't remember what the VDIAB2 form is? I have in my head that there is a medical questionnaire that you also need to send with the application but that could be out dated info now :)

Diet drinks - the artificial sweeteners taste vile.
Having to forswear foods I have loved all my life.
Trying to find low carb meals when eating out.
You are obviously aware of the major delays in handling paper forms at the moment and the proposed ongoing strike action by DVLA staff.

VDIAB2 is the one that goes to your diabetic consultant. VDIAB1 is the one that is usually filled in by yourself and sent on 'normal' diabetic applications.

So, looking at

ins186_a_guide_for_drivers_with_insulin_treated_diabetes.pdf

It makes more sense now.

The need for them to make me see 3 doctors is an absolute joke though.

Thank you for your help.

I win and then lose again as accidents stop my exercise: I picked my 12-14 stone mother up after a fall then did the normal ab crunches that evening, stood up and it was as though I'd torn my left gluteus maximus. My back was seized for 4 days and I'm still in pain. My bloods were perfect with medication and exercise but keeping them down means starving to the point of frustration.
Being a hgv driver (WHEN I can find work) means controlling it.
I dont eat meat or veg apart from the potato after being force-fed as a child. **** diet- oats and protein shake every morning helps but without exercise I'm stuffed.
Getting older means deterioration in many ways and getting the right exercise is not always possible.

Process.

Step 1.
Get forms D2, D4, VDIAB1 from DVLA (I would post a link but that would keep changing)

Step 2.
Attended appointment with a doctor (£60 cost to me) to fill in my D4. (this will most likely NOT be your GP, so do a search on google for "D4 License". 20 minutes of talk, reading eye chart, blood pressure, medication and glancing at your accu-chek (in my case) monitor for at least 90 days continous readings. (This appointment occurs every 5 years).

Step 3.
D2, D4, VDIAB1 and driving license sent to DVLA 24/07/2021 (took a few photos of my license and emailed them to myself to ensure it comes back with everything it had on before).

Step 4.
98 days later.
Letter received today from DVLA dated 26th October asking me to make an appointment with my diabetes specialist within the next 6 weeks and then telephone DVLA with the date of the appointment. (they pay for this one).
Appointment with Diabetic Consultant on the 11th November. Telephoned DVLA on an automated line with no issues, using the keypad to input the required info.

Day 146.
Got letter from the DVLA today (Dated 7th December 2021) stating my consultant still hasn't sent details from my 11/11/2021 appointment to them.

Step 5.
Day 174.
Got letter for DLVA asking me to make an appointment at diabetic clinic to see an "independent hospital consultant".

Day 214.
Appointment to see independent hospital consultant 21/02/2022. Went through meter readings, asked about lows, asked about awareness of lows. That was it.

Day 231.
Online System updated with new codes, can now drive over 3500kg again.

Day 234.
Physical license came through today.
