Hi, my name is Marcel.

I've been diabetic type 1 since i was 12. I've had it for around 20 years now. Lately I'm finding it more difficult to manage my levels. I'm on 2 shots a day of actraphane HM, sometimes more if my levels spike. Recently I have been trying to minimise my carb intake and eat mostly protein and vegetables, with very little carbs, no more than a small portion of rice or 2 pieces of toast.

Anyway, latley my levels are spiking up and down and I really need to get a handle on this and manage my diabetes more effectively.

I'm in relatively good health, I do martial arts and I run when I get the oppurtunity. I also do parkour from time to time, so I'm quite fit and strong.

I just need help, if someone out there has a formula for managing my blood sugar levels I would be grateful. For example, i need help with say my blood levels are at a low of 2.2. What would be the recommended food to eat or drink without spiking it? i'm having a bit of trouble with this.
What time of day would be ideal to do a workout? what times should i be eating and what foods should i be eating for my main meals and snacks. What time should I go to sleep, how many hours sleep does a diabetic need?
All I want is a better quality life.

Thanks I appreciate your time and thoughts on the matter.

Regards,

Marcel

Hi. I believe your Actraphane may be a mixed insulin? If so, although a mixed insulin keeps injections down to two a day it doesn't give the best control. Many T1s like myself are on the Basal/Bolus regime where you have one or two doses of a 24hr (Basal) insulin and a shot of rapid insulin (Bolus) per meal. I have one daily shot of Basal and normally only 2 shots of Bolus as my breakfast is small. I would discuss your insulin regime with the doc and investigate moving to Basal/Bolus; it does mean two pens. Sleep for a diabetic should be the same as a non-diabetic and with Basal/Bolus you can eat when you want. Yes, do keep the carbs down anyway as it avoids weight gain although you obviously keep fit anyway thru exercise.

Second what Diabell says, if you can ask to change to a basal/bolus insulin regime.

thank you for your input. much appreciated.
