Hear, hear! I have found plenty of evidence to say LCHF lowers weight and cholestrol and am living proof of this! No-one has managed to show me the evidence to prove that what I am doing is wrong and that I should eat low fat. In fact, in low fat food, the fat has often been swapped out for sugar - take yoghurt for example! Still, I know that some people have had incredible success with low GI so I guess it's each unto their own!Yeah, well, you have to get some kind of energy from diet, you know, or you will starve to death eventually. I can´t see why fat should be avoided, but I have valid reasons to stay off carbs. And try to keep protein in the normal-low region to protect my kidneys.
I just wish someone could tell me what there is to be afraid of when it comes to fat.
I am trying to make changes gradually in advance of my appointment with nurse for referral to RIO (the local institute for obesity). I am trying where possible to swap things I used to eat (like chocolate, cakes, biscuits etc) for healthier snacks. It is quite confusing though. I do need help with my diet and that is why I am getting referred. Is it acceptable to snack on fruit and nuts?
I also find lunchtimes a challenge because I am used to having a sandwich and often dont feel like a salad, or feel like preparing one. I expect the answer is have wholemeal bread? But why am I allowed a piece of wholemeal bread and not white bread? Dont they have the same calories in? Or do I have to give up bread altogether? What about potatoes?
Hi Alyson,My results were 6.9 and 5.8, taken a week apart. He said there was no diagnosis here of diabetes, checked my BP (normal), weight said my BMI was 31 and I was obese and I should change my eating habits and try to lose weight. He offered to refer me to a local weight loss group but I have heard there is a lot of exercise when you go to weekly classes. This wont work for me as I have two double disc bulges with impingement and fibromyalgia. I do what I can, when I can, but obviously my reduced mobility have led to my weight gain. I will monitor my blood myself, I will go away and lose weight perhaps via weightwatchers or slimming world as I have done that successfully before. I realise it is, as you say above, pretty much in my hands and only I can change things.
If any other members have been to weightwatchers or slimming world with a diagnosis of diabetes and used the diet successfully, can you please let me know.
Who is saying fat should be avoided ? You post but you don't look at others posts !Yeah, well, you have to get some kind of energy from diet, you know, or you will starve to death eventually. That's a very good point... That includes my mom too, even though she's had Diabetes for 30 years.....our current pensioners have had extended lives from living through times when things were rationed and like my mum and stepdad they still dont eat large quantitys of anything.
I do, don't I? And everywhere it is Low Carb, OK, Low Fat OK, but High Fat is NOT Ok. And that leaves us with High Protein, bad idea IMO. While a high fat diet has no adverse effects at all.Who is saying fat should be avoided ? You post but you don't look at others posts !

I still don't understand where we differ. I agree low carb=good, I have no problem with fats or proteins. I just don't agree with the word "high" ! Is that our only difference ?I do, don't I? High fat is the healthy option, if you stick to good fats and avoid the bad ones like rice bran oil, corn oil and such.
Probably. If everything else is low, something has to be high and as the only solution is fat, yes, high fat is good. High protein is not, high carb definitely bad.I still don't understand where we differ. I agree low carb=good, I have no problem with fats or proteins. I just don't agree with the word "high" ! I didn't say everything had to be low. I just said low carb lol ! We're so very close to shaking hands and sharing a fry up ! I don't believe anything has to be high, what is high anyway ? How much fat ? We could go on and on. I think we may have to just agree to disagreeProbably. Fats are healthy, essential and will not cause obesity nor high bg.
Hej på dej! Hur står det till? Have you ever plattoed? Have now lost 1 stone 2lbs and gained 4lbs back, having stayed the same for 2 weeks. Think water retention is problem but have also eaten lentils and beans in the evening. Feeling anxious as have hospital appointment on Friday and had hoped to have lost more weight to argue the LCHF approach. Hope your husband is on the mend! XProbably. I would rather agree, but you keep shrinking away from fat. Why? I say a reasonable amount per day is 150-200 grams of fat, on a low-carb diet, as I think it wise for many reasons not to go too high in protein. As a diabetic on diet alone this may be of greater importance for me, as I can´t put any extra insulin into me. So low carb, HIGH FAT is a really good thing. And moderate protein.I didn't say everything had to be low. I just said low carb lol ! We're so very close to shaking hands and sharing a fry up ! I am trying to catch up on all the work I didn't manage in the winter, along with all the spring things to do AND we are selling a house brother and I inherited AND I have invited my neighbours for coffee on Sunday as it is my birthday so I have to make a LCHF cake and all the rest.Hej på dej! OK, last post from me as I find I keep repeating myself. I am not shrinking away from fat. Where have I said that ? I eat fat all the time ! I just don't eat loads of fat. I don't have a high fat diet. That's not avoiding it. I play squash twice a week, that's doesn't mean I'm avoiding it just because I don't play 7 days a week ! i'm so happy you have found a great diet that you're comfortable with and works for you. I also think your passion for helping others is admirable. I just think that your opinion is not the only one.I would rather agree, but you keep shrinking away from fat. Why? Sounds hectic but fun! What kind of cake? Are you doing anything else or is it going to be a chilled out one?I am trying to catch up on all the work I didn't manage in the winter, along with all the spring things to do AND we are selling a house brother and I inherited AND I have invited my neighbours for coffee on Sunday as it is my birthday so I have to make a LCHF cake and all the rest.
I must say enjoy myself hugely. I haven't had this energy for years, no, for decades. The best thing that could happen to me was to go strict LCHF. As to weight, I have dropped the weight I put on when on HRT patches in a couple of weeks, but I am not into this for weight loss, but for bg control.
I think I will make a LC Schwarzwald cake and some coconut things for diabetics, and cinnamon rolls. We have half a fruit cake left over from Christmas as well. So friends over for coffee and cake on Sunday afternoon, that´s about it. Hubby and me will enjoy a nice meal, of course, but otherwise, no, too busy. I did the whole hog last year when I turned fifty.Sounds hectic but fun! What kind of cake? Are you doing anything else or is it going to be a chilled out one?
Why do you keep saying "I'm afraid of fat" or "shrinking away from fat" ? Where do you get these thoughts from ? Where have I mentioned this ?I want to understand where we differ.
I know I get a bit passionate when it comes to fat as so many, including you, seem to be afraid of fat. To me, if you do low carb that means you have to go high fat. What other alternatives are there? Protein is not an option in the long run.
Sorry to be so opinionated, but I want to understand your take on nutrition and I don't, so far.
