Hello everyone
I joined this forum because I wanted to share my experience hoping to help others.
I was diagnosed pre diabetic approximately two maybe two and a half years ago. About me. I’m 55 now, train 6 times a week (was previously to my diagnosis) I’m what some would call a racing snake. My doctor did a random blood check and informed me I was pre diabetic. I was dumbfounded. She said just ease up on the fizzy drinks I said I don’t drink them at all she said then cut down on the sugary foods I said I cut almost it all out in 2016 due to stomach issues, she said alcohol? I said I don’t drink at all. Anyhow I’ve been battling the glucose meter for the last two years with the results being the harder I tried to get my numbers down the worse my reading would be. I should say the Dr said my average was 6. I’ve been testing my self from one to three times a day with the finger prick test and I’ve ranged from ,good mid 5’s to not so good high 6’s and the odd 7 even 8. I don’t take any medication and have been really struggling to come to terms with this especially as I couldn’t control the reading whether I fasted all day or trained harder, well actually training longer did drop one point temporarily but training very intensely increased the number maybe 2 points.
My diet. I’ve been a vegetarian most of my life but started eating fish because most of my diet previously was carbohydrates, pasta potatoes bread all manor of vegetables and fruit had to be drastically reduced. I was eating 3-4 eggs per day also.
Around 6 weeks ago I decided to stop eating fruit and vegetables as I had been concerned about the pesticide and weed killer that’s on them and after 3 weeks of only eating eggs, fish and chips and organic porridge and cheese tosties my glucose numbers started to drop. Now after 6 weeks of the same diet my numbers seem totally normal healthy numbers ranging from low to high 4’s my glucose monitor says the last two weeks my average is 4.4 now I can tell you I would have needed to cycle 30mins to be 4.4 the change in my numbers it astonishing for me and my mood as I know that dreaded feeling when the numbers are high.
I know everyone is going to be different but even if you google search pesticides and diabetes it confirms it. It seems even organic fruit and vegetables can have some pesticides on them.
Hopefully this information helps someone.

Interesting story, thanks for sharing & well done on keeping the numbers down. I couldn’t not eat veggies they make the bulk of my diet. I definitely couldn’t eat fish & chips, toasties & porridge - you say you are cured. Do you know what your HbA1c test was when you were diagnosed with pre diabetes and your latest one? Finger prick tests are good at telling you what your BG is at a precise moment in time but a HbA1c gives a more accurate measure of what your BG is doing over 3 or 6 months.

Whilst I agree pesticides aren’t great I’m not sure the claim that they have an effect in diabetes is correct.

Hi @Ironzie ,

Welcome to the forum.

Always advisable to wash fruit & vedge before consuming.
Even packaged salad leaf?

Looking at testimonies of non-diabetics online experiments for sport using CGMs.
Fluctuating BG as high as 8Mmol. Can be the norm as long as they come back down?

Hi
The “fish and chip” diet was just a test to reduce my pesticide intake. It will be in the potatoes also as the plant above the ground absorbs it and the plant’s vascular system transfers it into the potato but my pesticide intake is massively reduced.
As I said my doctor tested me two years ago, it was the HbA1c test I was 6.0. The funny thing is after two years of very low carb diet and fasting and basically torturing myself I was tested a couple months ago at exactly 6.0 again. I remember saying to my mother what was the point of the change of my diet. I was tested recently because I was loosing weight and I couldn’t stop it. I was loosing one pound a week and I’d lost about nine pounds. I was only 9stone 9 pounds before I started loosing weight and my ribs were on full display. I’m now back to 9 stone 8 pounds.
I would do the finger prick test first thing in the morning and record it, any other time was before and after training or after fasting.
Go tonight and research on the internet pesticides causing diabetes.

What was your recent HbA1c?

Your earlier HbA1c was just on the cusp of prediabetes, and given a margin of error with the tests could well be considered normal.

Do you test before and 2 hours after your meals to see how they are affecting your blood sugar? The test levels you quote seem fine for random tests.

Can you post some links to the studies which show a link between pesticides and diabetes please.

I don’t have time to research - I’ve had a quick look but can only find that those that use pesticides in their work such as farmers in Asian regions MAY have a slightly higher susceptibility to T2 not proven because too many lifestyle factors run along side. Nothing about eating food grown treated with pesticides. My T2 certainly wasn’t caused by eating a lot of veg. Like @Lakeslover sats can you point us to the research you used to come to this conclusion

Hi there!
Washing will do very little good, the pesticides absorbs into the fruit and through the vascular system into the vegetable. Research shows soaking the fruit and veg in baking soda helps the most but who does that?
I’ve done so many finger prick test I could almost guess my numbers from what I had to eat for dinner the previous day but sometimes I did have a curveball number. In that case I tested myself again to see if it was accurate or not. I know these machines are not super accurate but it’s usually in the ballpark. Most finger prick machines store your previous numbers and averages. my tester previous showed avg 5.8 now it’s avg 4.4. I had toast and marmalade for supper for the first time in years a couple days ago just to test things and the next day I was 4.2,previously I’d have been a 6.5-6.8 the next morning after that.

That number tells you nothing - to know what you’ve eaten is affecting your BG you should test at first bite & 2hrs after first bite - you should be looking for a rise of no more than 2 or ideally back to where you were at first bite. I also think if you tested after 1 hour you may have been surprised at the number.

I’ve never used one but maybe try a CGM to see what all these foods are doing to you after eating them not the next day. Some are available on 14 day free trial but I’m not sure which ones. We have lots of members who use them, hopefully someone can let you know which ones are offering free trial at the moment

Hi again,

I’d love to read any links you have to what you have found.

Could you please support with a reliable source.?

“I don’t have time to research” lol very good!
Folks I’ve told you my experience, I really hope some people try this as I personally know the torture this horrible affliction is. Nice to meet you all and farewell!

@Ironzie

It’s not up to members to research your claims, the forum rules state you must provide a link to a reputable source to your claims, not the other way round. I did research a bit but nothing came up on 2 pages saying eating foods grown with pesticides causesT2 diabetes, or indeed stopping eating them cures diabetes, which is your claim

Edited to correct spelling

Hi,

Even fish are “said” to have certain man made Carcinogenics. They are what they eat?
It would be lovely to discus with you..

The two main CGMs available on a free trial, the Libre and Dexcom are only available as a free trial to Diabetics not people who are pre diabetic. However @Ironzie a CGM would give you a better insight into how your actions are affecting your blood sugar levels.
