Hi All, I hope this is the right place for Type 2 life...

My keto sticks arrived, later than expected but they're here.

My first try was on Wednesday and I think the colour matched the trace square. Today I was more organised with stopwatch on tablet and I definitely matched 1.5 and 4.0. I am quite pleased.

Good morning Swiggy. Please excuse my ignorance, but what are keto sticks? And why do you need a stopwatch? Congratulations if you are quite pleased.

Hi @Kyambala , I'm type 2 and have been following a low carb diet since January. If the body doesn't have any carbohydrates to use for fuel it burns fat instead. As I understand it, ketones are a by-product of fat burning and are excreted in urine. You collect a urine sample in a container (I used a disposable plastic cup) and dip the tip of the ketostick in the urine. Wait for 15 seconds and match the colour to a chart on the pot the sticks come in.
The colour carries on darkening as time goes on so it's important to count 15 seconds accurately.
I bought a pot of 50 sticks from Amazon. Bayer Ketostix Reagent Strips for £6.15 with free postage. I just wanted to know if my lchf diet was working and this was quite an easy, cheap way to check.
I am sure that monitoring blog glucose with a meter is more important. I have been testing first thing in the morning, immediately before eating and two hours after eating and I can see improvement. I'm just not the most patient person and need to recognise that lowering blood glucose without medication is a long term project.
I am having my hba1c measured on Friday and I have an appointment to discuss result next week. I am still very new to this, but I am looking forward to seeing what my level is now and then trying to get it lower with diet rather than medication.

Thank you for that useful information "Swiggy". I started LCHF at the beginning of February (because I had some Muesli left)
and at first started losing 1 kilo weight every couple of days. Now I have stopped losing weight and my weight has gone back up to 85 kilos, where I started from. BUT, my Insulin needs have dropped from 44 units in the morning to 26, and in the evening from 34 units down to 12 - so I am winning part of the battle.

Now, after reading your post I shall start looking at "kitosticks".

Thank you.

You've made a great start.. come back and let us know the most recent HbA1c results.
I will @bulkbiker expect my results posted on this forum on 4th April. I have learned so much from reading about other people's experiences and the advice I have been given.

BTW, I got Ketostix from my local Boots. Not in stock but picked them up the next day. And cheaper than Amazon at £5.75 for 50.
