I think I am diabetic...

Messages

First of all, sorry as I suppose there are lot of these sorts of posts here...

For the last week I have been noticeably very thirsty, even waking up in the night and wanting a drink, and thus have been going to the toilet a lot more. I haven't been feeling particularly tired or any more hungry than usual.

My mother was type 1 diabetic, but it came on when she was a relatively young adult (early 20's)

I went to Boots today to get a blood testing kit. Washed my hands. The first test came back 12.2 I tried the other hand (although I am not sure what difference I thought it would make, and that came back 12.4

All I have had to eat before the test all day was two boiled sweets and a salad at lunchtime (5 hours before the test)

_

I've been reading around and can see 12.2 is pretty high especially as I haven't just eaten.

I am not registered with a doctor, but I am going to try to on Monday and also take a couple more tests over the weekend to see if the rate changes any.

I'm 35 years old, male, white, very overweight (5' 10'' and 21 and a half stone).

I know there isn't much I can do until I go see the doctor, and 12.2 doesnt look like a "go to hospital now" sort of score from what I've read. My mother before she was diagnosed fainted and had no energy at all, I dont feel bad in myself other than a bit sick with worry now.

Because of my weight and age, is it more likely that this is type 2 diabetes? (that I have read you can do a lot to fight back against just by losing weight and having a healthier life)

Or is it more likely it is type 1 because of the genetics.

I appreciate nobody can tell me what is wrong just from reading this... am just feeling really panicky, don't know how unlikely it is to get type 1 diabetes at 35. My mum died in her mid 50's from complications from diabetes. She had a lot of other issues to, but right now I just feel really bad. I know I havent even had a diagnosis yet, but 12.2 is over double the right level, and I havent even just eaten anything full of calories, so it looks pretty bad to me.

Take yourself to A & E or a Walk-In Centre. Show them your readings. They may do a urine test as well. Do have something to eat before you go anyway.

I'm sorry to say, but those numbers sound diabetic to me. As we don't know what Type, it's best to get yourself to A and E as you will need immediate treatment if Type 1. Best of luck.

I agree, don't feel bad about going to hospital, if your mother had type 1 then there's a good chance it could be type 1 (maybe even slow onset) but of course it could still be t2, but either way those readings are diabetic especially as you had washed your hands. Hope all is okay, if it definitely is the big D, then don't be afraid to hang out here, there age lots of knowledgeable friendly people here, full of advice.

Hang in there and do what these good folk say.

I have just been diagnosed as Type 2 and am scrabbling round for info at the moment. I picked up a free booklet today from Tescos "Living with Type 2 diabetes". I am sure when I get round to reading it,it will be a real help.

I don't know of I need a monitor yet... So you are a step ahead of me as I haven't even taken any readings yet.

I am a bit overweight...Have Emphasyma and I drink, So any advice I glean from here will be good advice and hopefully I can lose some weight and start to live again.

You have chosen a great forum to be a part of.....

Months ago not long after I found out I had T2 I tested other family members for fun. My 15 y.o. granddaughter was over 12. I told my daughter that was too high she said she had been eating all day so I accepted that (Remember I was only new myself) but I can't help wonderful if that was OK. What do others think.

These are the readings I have taken so far:

12.2 mmol/L - 18:00 7 June - no food
12.4 mmol/L - 19:00 7 June - small meal
13.0 mmol/L - 22:00 7 June - no food
13.3 mmol/L - 07:00 8 June - no food
11.3 mmol/L - 09:00 8 June - no food

I guess I'll walk down to A&E. It can't do any harm.

To EFL 43,

The following information is taken from http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes_care ... anges.html

Normal and diabetic blood sugar ranges

For the majority of healthy individuals, normal blood sugar levels are as follows:
Normal blood glucose level in humans is about 4 mmol/L

When operating normally the body restores blood sugar levels to a range of 4.4 to 6.1 mmol/L
Shortly after a meal the blood glucose level may rise temporarily up to 7.8 mmol/L

The NICE guidelines for Diabetics T1, T2 and children, before and after meals, are also found here: http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes_care ... anges.html

However, many diabetics choose to keep tighter control than the recommended NICE guidelines.

If I had the constant high levels that strange famous is reporting without the intake of food, I would be feeling very unwell.

I hope by the time strange famous reads this message that medical assessment will have taken place.

Well, I am diabetic. Ended up in hospital all over the weekend because I need insulin and they wouldn't discharge me until diabetic nurse had shown me how to test blood and inject (which is fair enough)

They aren't sure if type 1 or type 2, they think more likely type 2 because of my weight and age, but some risk of type 1.

Got discharged but have to walk back later tonight to pick up the second half of medication.

I was pretty stressed Saturday, kind of come to terms with it now.

If I have it, its a lot better to find out like this rather than when it causes a big problem some time later on. And now I can get on top of it and feel better.

I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis, keep on at them in regards to checking which type. It's not the end of the world and you will have good days and bad days, feel free to ask as many questions as you need in regards to meds/foods/ and I'm sure you will get lots of advice.

Sorry to hear that, but you're right, much better to find out now rather that when things have gotten worse. Stay on this forum, there's so much help on here. It's made my control better, that's for sure.

All the best.

Well done for taking the steps to get yourself sorted. Keep posting here to let us know how you are getting on with your new regimen.

Best wishes

I am still struggling to understand how my blood sugar can move around so much I guess.

I woke up today and it was 9.9, just before lunch it was 6.6, now 3 hours after lunch (and insulin) it is 16.4.

I guess maybe it just takes some times to work out the right dosage or whatever...

I found that it took my body a few weeks to adjust to the new regimen when first diagnosed. Do you have someone from your support team that you can call for advice? Were you given a load of guidance literature to try to understand?

I had a 500 kcal meal 2 hours ago (and the insulin dosage) and now its 6.6...

I think I ought to stop testing myself every couple of hours and.... the nurse did say only to do it twice a day for now.

That is a good resilt. You don't know whether you are T1 or T2 yet, but you are injecting insulin. You probably know how your mother dealt with injections and testing, so test as often as you need to. First thing in the morning and before meals, two hours after meals and before bed. And test at any other time that you feel odd or not quite right.

Keep a diary of what you are eating, the injection given and the two hour test result and so on. That will show you how you are progressing.

What insulin regimen are you on?

8 units of a fast acting one after each meal
20 units of a slow one before bed
2 metmorfin (sic?) tablets a day

I have an appointment at the diabetic clinic tomorrow afternoon so hopefully I'll be able to get my head around things better after speaking to them.

Am keeping a food diary already (and noting down my injections so I don't miss one)
